Sprague hands statement designating June 30 to July 6 as Keep Oregon Green Week to Nelson S. Rogers, state forester. A statewide mobilization is planned. Salem. June 18.—Urging the peo ple of Oregon to keep forest fires from the state, as a vital step in national defense. Governor Charles A. Sprague has designated a Keep Oregon Green Week for statewide observance. He made this state ment: Asks Mobilization “Believing that defense of Ore. gon's forests is vital to the con tinued prosperity and happiness of our people and constitutes a very important phase of nation al defense, I hereby designate the week of June 30 to July 6. 1941. as 'Keep Oregon Green Week'. It is my earnest hope that every adult and child in Oregon may be impressed with his or her responsibility in guarding our magnificent trees from forest fires and wastage of every kind. I call every Ore gonian to arms against our for est foes. Let this special week be a time of mobilization in a great cause. Keep Oregon Green 1" Membership Invited • John B. Woods, executive secre tary of the Keep Oregon Green association, reports that plans are complete for a statewide enrollment of active members of the association during the special week designated by the governor. Enrollment places will be established in every com munity where membership cards and pins will be Issued, upon pay ment of the annual 25-cent dues. Every cent of proceeds from mem bership enrollment goes for educa tional and publicity purposes, Mr. Woods said. Permanent Set-up The Keep Oregon Green associa tion Is an outgrowth of the state wide committee appointed by Gov ernor Sprague to organize the state for forest protection. A. mill Tues day night of last week is about the same, according to reports heard yesterday, Wednesday. On Friday, six young men from Vernonia were taken in to offer their blood for transfusions, Two of the boys gave blood and others will answer a call should the need arise. Young McDonald regained consciousness once for a short while to ask for a drink of water but relapsed again into the state of coma in which he has been since the accident. His condition is still serions although the hospital re ports he is phtting up a good fight. Civil Reserves to Be Enrolled Soon Oregon’s county defense councils, which are the foundation of th< state’s plans for defense against war emergencies, were asked today to enroll the civil reserves as so'm as possible. Jerrold Owen, state coordinator for civilian defense, suggested the dates of June 23 to 28 as “civil defense enrollment week,” but he said other dates would be entirely satisfactory if the county defense councils preferred them. The list for the 80th fair —September 1 to 7, inclusive— offers more than $42,000 in prem- iums. The total cash prizes for upen class competition are about the same as last year and will be dis tributed in these departments: Draft horses, beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, goats, swine, pounsry, pigeons, rabbits, honey and bees, fruits and vegetables, grains, seeds, art, flowers, baking and textiles. Good Goods » Many thousand Oregon citizens, both men and women, will be en rolled in the civil reserves, to serve as police reserves, aircraft observ ers, fire department reserves, air raid wardens and members of first aid squads. Owen asks mayors of all cities to issue proclamations calling up on patriotic citizens to enlist in the civil reserves, and, he requested the cooperation of newspapers and radio stations. Local offices of the state employment service will assist in the enrollment. Applications in Duplicate To guard against subversive ele ments gaining a foothold in the civil reserves, the county defense councils will ask volunteers if they are willing to bn fingerprinted. But the fingerprint will be required only from those who are assigned to duty. All applications for service will be filled out in duplicate. The orig inal will be retained by the county defense council; the duplicate, and the fingerprint record, will be sent to the state headquarters for checking. Owen requested county councils to incorporate in their organiza tions existing groups such as Am erican Legion disaster relief units, American Red Cross first aid groups and cilivian fire and police auxil iaries which are already function ing. Five Major Divisions County defense councils, under Owen's suggested plan, will be divided into five major divisions. The planning division will deal with publicity, financial, industrial', and registration matters, while the protection division’s activities will include police, fire, debris clear ance, demolition, rescue, first aid, evacuation and air raid precautions.
