Honeyman park, south of Florence on the Oregon Coast highway, offers hiking, swimming and fishing in the scenic coast lake country. (State Highway Commission photo.) BY FRED W. COLVIG This Is one of a series of "motorlogs” describing auto journeys to scenic and recreational areas of Oregon and the north west, in co-operation with the Oregon State Motor association. The article is condensed from The Oregonian. Jessie M. Honeyman state park, four miles south of Flor ence on the coast highway, is Oregon’s new $250,000 come back to that old objection of park visitors—“Well, we got an eyeful of scenery, but there wasn’t anything to do.” It is 522 acres, patterned on a credo of “fun.” Sam Boardman, state park director, told us about it when we stopped our "Three-A” mo torlog car in Salem. He calls Honeyman park a guide for fu ture development in the larger parks of the state system. Two woods-girt lakes, Woahink and Cleawox, bor dered on the ocean side by the famed Florence sand dunes, have been developed purely for Mr. and Mrs. John Public and the kids. But the accent on “fun,” Mr. Boardman made clear, could not detract from the eye-filling beauty of the setting. It was worth a look-see. Like ‘Twisted Hand* We arrived at night, and from the dark lakes came the hoarse clamor of frogs. Daylight, at the lakeside resort where we spent the night, showed Lake Woahink lying like a twisted hand, with long fingers of water reaching up forested inlets. These coastal lakes—there are some ten sizable bodies in a 15- mile stretch—resulted from the vagaries of wind and tide which reared great sand dunes across stream mouths, causing the wa ters to back up and fill the ensuing hollows. Tahkenitch, Siltcoos, Woa- kink and Cleawox lakes lie in a close chain. The latter two lakes, separated by Highway 101, have long frontages in Honeyman park. Woahink stands out among this necklace of lakes in the abruptness with which its fringing forest rises from the water’s edge; deep waters submerge the marshy littoral associated with its com panion lakes. Forest Cloaks Shore Spruce, fir, hemlock and scat tered jack pines, with an undergrowth of salal, huckle berry and rhododendron—some of which reach 30 foot heights Map shows location of new Jessie M. Honeyman park and principal highway routes. -5HEET PORTABLE 3 i j —cover the slopes of Lake Woahink. Lake Cleawox, across the highway, is cupped in a hollow of the dunes. Dense jack pines cover three edges, while on the ocean side tawny sands rise in a spectacular undulation of dunes, declared to be the highest on the Oregon coast. Cleawox, with its massive stone and beam bathhouse, is the center of water sports, al- thought swimming floats and diving boards have been pro vided on both lakes. Hidden in the trees both at Woahink and Cleawox are log-hewn picnic tables and communal kitchens. At Cleawox, too, a large play- field for softball and other games has been cleared. The field will be sown to grass—an acre or so of turf. $250,000-Plus Expended At Honeyman park the state has spent $20,056 in acquiring the 522 acres and $5539 for improvements. The federal gov ernment has contributed CCC labor, materials and park serv ice supervision valued at about $230,000. In a park named for Jessie M. Honeyman, noted for her labors 1 in behalf of wayside beauty, it could be taken for granted that the park would not be lacking 1 in that regard, and it wasn’t, we found. Both Lake Woahink and Lake Cleawox have high reputations for fishing: trout in Woahink and bass in Cleawox. Public camping is not per- ‘ mitted in Honeyman park and the nearest such facilities are at Siltcoos lake, two miles south. There are, however, several pri vate resorts outside the park area, where lodging ranges from $2.50 to $5 a night, depending on the size of the party. 1.
