COMMENTS OF THE WEEK
THE INFANTILE
PARALYSIS FUND—
THAT TIME of the year approaches
again when interest is devoted to the Presi
dent’s Birthday Ball and to the “March of
Dimes,” both activities being devoted to the
securing of funds for the fight against infan
tile paralysis.
The campaign fpr funds has taken on
larger proportions yearly. In 1940 §263,670.39
was raised by the dime contributions alone.
That figure was a substantial increase over
the amount of 1939 when §217,000 was raised.
The march was first started in 1938.

gon, under the act of March 3, 1879.
Official newspaper of Vernonia, Oregon
The drive this year has been given new
strength due to the fact that the nation suf
fered the fifth worst attack of paralysis iast
year. Government statistics reveal that 9,768
boys and girls, men and women were stricken
during the year. This number was 2,480 more
than in 1939 when 7,288 persons were struck
down.
President Roosevelt in commenting on
the necessity of continued vigor in the fight
said, “Nothing is closer to my heart than the
health of our boys and girls and young men
and young women. To me it is one of the
front lines of our National Defense.”
A NEW YEAR
IS STARTED—
A NEW year is beginning with all the
changes that mark a renewed start into the
future. Consider, for example, that new offic
ers take chairs in many organizations both
fraternal and civic, that a year of business
has been completed and another started and
that predictions for the future are made. Con
sider also, that a part of the winter season
has passed and that signs of spring are evi
dent even though the latter are quite likely
misleading.
With the end of December holidays, life
again becomes normal to the extent that
people resume everyday activities in a mein
common to months when no holidays occur.
Yes, January marks the beginning of life
anew with hopes for a brighter future.
