VERNONIA EAGLE, VERNONIA, OREGON PAGE FOUR COMMENTS OF THE WEEK THE LOGGERS DESERVE MUCH SUPPORT SEEDING OF BURNED-OVER LAND NOW PROVES TIMELY— EDITORIAL CONGRATULATIONS are due Vernonia’s Logger football eleven this week for its record of wins so far in the 1940 conference season. Not for several years has Vgrnonia had a football team of sufficient power to win over all teams in the Columbia conference with the exception of one, as is the case this season. Remaining yet in Vernonia’s path to the championship is Scappoose. With no game scheduled this week-end the Loggers should be in excellent playing condition for that final tilt. Then too, the Loggers may anticipate another good year in 1941 due to the fact that graduation will remove only a small number of players. It has happened in former years that graduation was responsible for the loss of practically an entire first team lineup. THE SEEDING of approximately 200 acres of land near the Stoney Point rock crusher will prove timely considering the fact that the seeding, to be most effective for a good stand of pasture grass, is being done at this time of the year. Seeding of burned-over land for pasture must be accomplished soon after fire has passed in order to prevent the growth of fern which renders the land of much less value as pasture. It is commendable that action was taken as soon as possible in providing for a future use for that portion of the county in that the land will be useful for stock raising. The basic difference between to- talitarianism and representative de- mocracy is that in the ‘first the state is supreme and its citizens and their interests subordinate to it, while in the second the state is supposed to be* the servant of the people rather than their master.
