Trout Season
To Open
April 13 th
Anglers to Have Oppor­
tunity V> ,Try Luck in
Few Days
A week from Saturday of this
week, Saturday, April 13, marks the
opening of the trout season in
Oregon, the season continuing until
October 15, inclusive.
A number of regulations have
been imposed by the Game Com
mission for the control of fishing.
All residents over the age of 14
years must have a license to hunt
or angle. In Columbia county a
number of streams have been clos­
ed to angling as follows:
Tide creek; all tributaries of the
Nehalem river except Rock creek;
a'll tributaries ol' Rock creek; all
tributaries of the Clatskanie river
above the mouth of Conyers creek;
all tributaries of Beaver creek;
that part of the North fork of
Scappoose creek and tributaries
above the Columbia river highway;
that part of Milton creek between
Taylor’s dam and its source closed
to al! angling to and including
April 12, 1940, and from Qetobei
16, 1940, to April 12, 1941, both
dates inclusive.
Further rules established by the
commission are: It is unlawful to
angle at any time between one
hour after sunset and one hour
be "ore sunrise; to fish by any
means other than with hook and
line; to use more than one line or
line and rod held in the hand; to
use more than two blades on a
spinner for lake or stream fishing;
to use more than three hooks on
a line except on floating bass
plugs; to sell, or offer for sale
or exchange any fish taken with
hook and line; to transport or ship
game fish without a written per-
mit; to fish without a license on
person; to refuse to show license
on demand; to angle within 200
feet of any fishway; to waste
wantonly game fish or allow others
to do so; to angle on private land
without permission from owner; to
net, trrp, spear, gaff, club, or
Shoot fish; to resist or interfere
with the duties of any officer en­
forcing the game laws; to cast into
or allow to be cast into any stream
or other body of water in Oregon,
sawdust or other lumber waste,
dye, chemical, decaying substance
(including
molded,
decomposed,
sour or spoiled salmon eggs) or to
use dynamite or other explosives
or any poisonous susbtance in any
such waters; and to fail to make
a report to the State Game Com­
mission of all gams fish taken
during 1939 at time of making
application for 1940 license.
SECOND SOFTBALL
MEET SET FOR
APRIL 4TH
A second meeting for soft-
ball enthusiasts, players and
managers, is slated for Thurs­
day evening of this week at
The Eagle office at 7:30 p.
m. as has been requested by
several present for the first
meeting last Thursday. No def­
inite plans for the season were
discussed at the first meeting
but consideration was given to
the possible playing field back
of the Washington grade school
end the date when league play
could begin.

Win Matches
Vernonia Gun Club Loses
Two Trys During Past
Weekend
Both Forest Grove and Troutdale
won rifle matches from the Ver-
ronia Ri le Club, the former Fri-
lay night, March 29 and the latter
Sunday, March 31.
The Forest Grove match was
he last of the sitting-standing af­
fairs of the season and it was
.enerally concluded that shooters
vere glad of that. Five high scorers
’or Vernonia were Nichols, 181;
^immerdahl, 178; Meilis, 178; Cul­
bertson, 167; and Kellmer, 165, to
fetal 869. Forest Grove scored
188 for the evening.
The Troutdale club reputedly the
argest in the United States with
membership of 346, won by a
core of 874 to Vernonia’s 867.
High scorers for Vernonia were
iimmerdahl, 182; Meilis, 172; Nich-
ols, 172; Kellmer, 171; and Fetsch,
170.
Track Team
Makes Good
Showing Fri.
The Vernonia high school track
team was in Portland, Friday,
March 29, to dun in the Hill Milit­
ary track meet held at the ice
colesium. Friday afternoon the
sprint medley was run between
A and B class teams. Each team
was required to run against time,
the four making the best time be-
ing qualified ibr the finals to be
run in the evening. The Vernonia
team was entered as an A class
learn and failed to Qualify by one
tenth of a second.
Friday evening the Vernonia
.earn ran the district medley to
make a favorable Showing for
itself.
This being the first track meet
of the season gave the boys hopes
of winning this year. The sprint
medley team consisted of Edgar
Culbertson, Philip Meilis, Clair '
Sunell and C'oice Hall. Runners
on the district medley team were
Edgar Culbertson, Philip Meilis,
Clair Sunell and Homer Michener.

Indoor Handicap Rifle Match of
the Columbia-Willamette Rifle Lea-
gue were received here this week
for the staging of the match to
be held Sunday, April 7 at the
Oregon Gun Club Rifle Range in
Portland.
The match is open to any in-div­
idual or 7 to 10-man team who
has shot five or more mabchee in
the Indoor Rifle Tournament of the
league in the 1939-1940 season.
The course will be 10 shots prone,
10 shots sitting, and 10 shots
standing for the record; sighting
shots optional, but must be fired
on sighting bull if taken.
Standard 50-foot rifle target will
be furnished by the league; only
one ¿hot to be fired at any record
bullseye; nine minute» per string
including sighting shots. Arms may
be any .22 calibre rim-fire ri'le.
The entry fee is 50c per individual
for all three positions and the
grand aggregate or 25c for any -
single position. Team entry fee is
$1.00 per team. Other rule« were |
given for the contest and are ob­
tainable from J. W. Nichols.
