FRIDAY, MARCH 29, 1940 VERNONIA EAGLE, VERNONIA, OREGON SPORTS Roy Bell NamedNovice Champion of State in Boxing Tournament Killian Forced to De fault Due, to Shoulder, Arm Injury Vernonia high school’s boxing team accompanied by its coaches, Fred MacDonald and Paul Gordon, attended the second Oregon State High School Boxing championship tournament held at Oregon City beginning Thursday of last week. The team left at noon in order to be able to weigh in between the required hours of 2 and 4 p. m. The drawing for bouts was made by the o ficials from Oregon City high school. There being so many contestants the bouts were started at 7:30 in order to be through by midnight. Vernonia had four men in the first round of the tournament. Max Millis lost by default to Knedler of Salem. L. Galloway lost a decision. Lewis Adams won a close decision from Bartell of Sheridan. Roy Bell won a very popular decision. Killian end Hawkins drew byes. Friday night Lewis Adams and Lyman Hawken lost close decisions. Killian won his first fight by outpointing Hagen of Salem and Bell won a close decision over Don Rogers of Oregon City. Sat urday night Bell fought Paul Orr of Sandy for the 135-pound. Novice Championship and won a very popu lar decision to become the second State Champion from Vernonia. Killim was forced to default his fight Saturday night because he had injured his arm and shouldeT in Friday’s bout. A large delegation attended from Vernonia on both Thursday and Friday night. Softball Started at High School Team Captains Chosen by Classes; Contests Started Wednesday SOFTBALL MEET DUE THIS EVE AT EAGLE OFFICE A meeting of all' players and managers interested in the organization of a softball league for Vernonia are urged to be present this evening at The Eagle oilfice at 7:30 p. m. Discussion of plans for the sea son will probably be the main topic of the evening with the possible number of teams to compete receiving consideration. Trackmen Enter Hill Carnival First Competition of 1940 Season to Be Experienced Friday On Friday afternoon Coach Mas- >n McCoy will take his Logger track men to Portland where at 1:30 on the wooden track of the ice colesium, they will' taste their irst competition of the 1940 sea- ;on in the annual Hill Relay carn- val. The local boys are entered n the distance medley and sprint medley. In the distance medley Phillip Millis will run 290 yards, Edgar Culbertson, 440 yards, Jack Baker, 880 yards, and Homer Mich- >ner, the three-quarter mile. In the print medley. Cloice Hall will run 145 yards, Clair Sunnell, 290 yards, Phillip Millis, 440 yards, Edgar Cul bertson, 580 yards. Features of the meet are the appearance of such world famous rtars as Glenn Cunningham, Tommy Deckard, Don Lash, Dixie Gooner, Earle Meadows, George Varofrf, Ron Hansen and Lon Zampereni, all performing in their specialities. Tuesday evening after school a committee composed of two boys from each class and the men of the faculty met for the purpose of drawing up rules and regulations governing the inter-class so tball league for Vernonia high school. It was decided play would begin Wednesday noon, March 27, at which time all teams would appear ready to play, and a drawing would be held to choose the teams to play the first game. Games wil be for Vernonia Gun Club Loses Shoot Forest Grove to Be Next Competition for Rifle men The Vernonia Rifle team lost a close match to Gresham tast Fri day evening at the Gresham rifle range. Although Vernonia made the highest score to date, 916, it was not enough to win the match. The “C” teams out-shot the “A” teams at this match and it was gratifying to see so many young “shooters” interested in this sport. Vernonia’s five highest individual scores were: Meilis, 187; Zimmer- dahl, 187; Kellmer, 184; Nichols, 180; and Fetsch, 178. MRS. ORWIG GIVEN SHOWER; PLUMBS VISIT HERE SUNDAY (Omitted last week.) Mrs. Carl Ander son was unable to attend. Cake, whip cream and coffee were served. Mr. and Mrs. George Plumb of Portland were Wilark visitors Sun day. Ted Lewis, and Mrs. Charles Lewis motored to Portland Wednes day to visit Mrs. Ralph Lattum who is in one of the Portland hos pitals. Mrs. Harry Sandon visited Mrs. Bob Wood one day last week. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lewis and Jean visited relatives Friday and Saturday at Portland. Ted Lewis, Frank Lane, Dick Lewis and Lewis Lane motored to Portland Saturday to visit Slim Small who is in one of the Portland hospitals. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Lewis are here visiting with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lewis and Mr. and Mrs. John Roberts during the Easter holidays. Mr. and Mrs. Chris Fowler and daughter, Helen, spent Sunday visit ing at the Orval McKinster home at Pittsburg. Mr. and Mrs. Allen Ray and children were visiting at the Earl Atkins home one day last week. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hanna and daughter, Dorothy, visited at the Nels Westlund home Saturday aft ernoon at Vernonia. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gay visited at the Chet Taylor home Sunday afternoon. Bud Atkins was a Vernonia shop per Saturday. Jean Lewis, Lylath Van De Bog art and Dorothy Hanna visited Pauline Rollins Thursday evening. They spent the evening sewing and towards the end of the evening a luncheon was served. three innings and Ibegin at 12:15.
