Many consumers purchase eggs
blindly because they do not under
stand the terms used to designate
grades and sizes.
And whdt is more important to
the producer, many poultrymen do
r.ot take advantage of the highest
possible price because they fail to
take the eggs to town while they
ate strictly fresh, says Director J.
D. Mickle of the state department
of agriculture, which enforces the
state egg law.
Briefly, state grades which con
front the purchaser of eggs mean:
Grade AA, strictly fresh with very
little of the secondary or water
white; grade A, slightly older than
the top grade and with weaker
body of both white and yolk. (Good
quality storage eggs fall into
Grade A class.) Grade B, an
which when broken out in the
finds the yolk flat on the
surface and both bodies of white
blended and soft.
Besides quality terms, each con-
vner of eggs must show the size.
The top or oversize eggs weigh
17 ounces or over per dozen. Other
zes graduate down to 15 ounces
er dozen in this order:; large,
medium, small and undersize.
December to mid-January.
With the United States index of I
prices paid by farmers at 122 per
cent of the 1910-1914 level and
prices received at 96, the exchange
value of farm products was indic
ated to be 79 per cent o.' the 1910-
1914 purchasing power, or 85 per
cent of the 1926-1930 average ex
change value. Prices and purchasing
power of some commodities are
considerably above the general
average, while others fall below.

Motor Transportation De
partment Operated More
Cheaply in 1939
It required $195,456 to operate
the Motor Transportation Depart-
meat of the State Utilities Com
missioner last year, according to
a statement just issued by Ormond
R. Bean, Commissioner who took
office on June 1st last year. For
this expenditure on the part of the
State in operating costs, revenues
or last year accruing to the State
for the benefit of good roads, new
construction and maintenance of
< id highways totaled $1,218,664.00,
an increase of $149,576 over rev
enues of 1938.
Bean’s statement reveals that the
cost operation was cut in 1939 over
1938 by $1,33^. The 1938 operat
ing expense statement for the
Motor Transportation Division of
tic Public Utilities Department of
the State government totaled $196,-
793.
The statement further reveals that
the expenditures in the two years,
igureff on a percentage of cash
receipts for administration of the
Motor Transportation Act, was
18.65 in 1938 as against 16.07 per
cent last year.
The report goes on to show that
in 1938 a total of 359 formal
h< arings on applications and com
plaints were held and 468 in 1939;
complaint investigations totaled 194
in ’38 and 229 in ’39.
Field audit recoveries totaled
$57,153 in ’38 and $53,129 last
year. These recoveries are due to
failure of licensed carriers to re
port properly and accurately all
receipts as required by the Act.
The Public Utilities Commissioner’s
.ffice has 16 nuditors on the road
al! year around. The number of
field audits made in 1938 totaled
1,893 and in ’39 the total was
1,654, a decrease of 239, Bean
stated that he hoped these audits
wid audit recoveries might be de
creased still further as the carriers
are fully informed of the Act and
its requirements.
