Log haulers are individual con

driver-salesmen are employes under
jurisdiction of the unemployment
insurance law
Referees Lawrence Brown and
William H. Witt made this distinc-
I tion in decisions submitted to the
, State Unemployment Compensation
Commission.
A Portland bakery driver who
worked rom April 15 to July 29,
1938, was awarded benefits of
$88.51, payable $13 a week, last

the driver’s pay was his profit after
expenses had been deducted, the

Although seasonal letdowns were

I her ranked 16th in the United
i States. In population the state is
I 34th.
With 5,343 job placements Ore
gon topped Washington’s 4,052 and
many other states of greater popu
lation, such as Msssachusetts, Kan
sas, Virginia, Florida, Oklahoma
and Colorado. With more than 80
per cent of the jobs in private in
dustry, Oregon also was among the
leaders, according to reports reach
ing Silas Gaiser, Administrator for
the State Unemployment Compensa
tion Commission.
In jobless benefits this state’s
position was 26th. Washington’s
$442,542 compensation was more
than double Oregon’s $206,540.
About half of the nation’s $28,-
347,000 in jobless checks for Nov
ember were from New York, Calif
ornia, Illinois and Pennsylvania.
Oregon’s active file of unemploy-
led amounting to 35,827 stood 37th
among the states. Washington’s
102,870 was nearly three times as
much on December 1, 1939, while
California reported 460,878 out o
work. Even New Mexico with less
than half Oregon’s population had
more unemployed.
