OernolP®Ea<jle FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, 1940 Post Office Shows Increased Business During Past Year Stamp Sales Gain Nearly Eight Per Cent Over Pre vious Year A check with figures compiled during the year of 11)39 at the Ver nonia post office revealed an in crease in business for the year just completed as compared with totals for the year 1938. The increase resulted even with considert-tion of the 11-week slack period during which the Oregon American mill was shut down. Considering .irst the °f stamps the total for the year 1939 was $12,312.35. Stamp sales in 1938 totaled $11,419.43, a figure $892.92 less than for 1939. '1 ae increase amounted to almost eight per cent. An examination of the postal sav ings records revealed that a total of $98,717.00 in certificates had been issued in 1939 as compared with $94,716.00 in 1938. Postal savings on deposit December 31st, 1939 amounted to $113,291.00. An interesting sidelight was the am ount of money on deposit Septem ber 14 just before the mill closed and on December 14. On the for mer date deposits amounted to $118,925.00, the peak of the year. On the latter date the amount was $112,571.00, the lowest amount. The amount had increased again to give the ligure for December 31st. ' A further check in the money order division of post office busi ness revealed a total of $271,744.92 for 1939 as compared with $270,- 029.06 for 1938. Of interest are the figures of the total money or ders issued per month during 1939: January, $22,265.64; February, $21,253.09; March, $25,446.96; April, $24,662.52; May, $24,095.08; June, $23, 476.19; July, $21,687- .52; August, $22,832.24; Septem ber, $24,033.20; October, $19,555- .51; November, $18,588.01; Decem ber, $23,848.96. She began her work in Vernonia Tuesday of this week. Harry A. Wilson was named as enumerator for St. Helens. The appointments were made by A. R. McCall of Rainier. The Uhl- man “family” is used advisedly in this instance because testing there is more or less of a family project.
