A REWARD WELL
EARNED INDEED—
RECENTLY APPEARING in a bulletin
issued by the United States Forest Service
with headquarters at Portland was an an
nouncement headed as follows: “Apprehen-
ders of Incendiarist Rewarded.” The state
ment continued under the heading as follows:
‘‘The federal gover.nment has just authorized
the payment of S300 award to four Portland
men who furnished evidence which led to the

arrest and conviction of a forest fire incen
diarist last spring.”
“Charles Gosso was convicted in Judge
Claude McCulloch’s court, Portland, Oregon,
on June 30 of felony for setting on fire or
leaving the fires unattended and of misde
meanor for failing to extinguish the fires be
fore leaving them. The sentence was two
years in federal prison and 30 days in the
county jail.”
Little, can be said in favor of the con
victed party but considerable in the way of
compliment can be extended to those instru
mental in supplying evidence and applying
punishment for the offense.
The man convicted is only one of many,
it seems, who has little realization of the
serious nature of destruction of the state’s
forest resource?. Those resources cannot be
expected to replenish at a pace in keeping
with the speed with which they are being re
moved. Lumbering activities are rapid in the
removal of forests under modern methods
and it is vitally of interest to all to maintain
standing timber as long as possible when it
is not being harvested.
Reports from forestry officials in the
Upper Nehalem Valley ajone have been numer
ous in mentioning fires which have every in
dication of being started intentionally. It is
usually possible to determine the cause of a
forest fire but difficult to apprehend the of
fender when the deed is premediated as is
the case with incendiarists. A good deal of
effort is expended in bringing to justice those
who are caught under sufficient evidence.
But, consider the matter in another man
ner. Should not people, those who do set for
est fires, be of sufficient foresight to realize
that the loss of burned timber will not be re
placed for many years and opportunities for
livlihood will be lessened thereby.
Just a moment of thought by those who
have been truilty of incendiarism would surely
reveal to them the damage they were con
templating.
