We have never antagonized Local 37, I.W.A., although at many times their
methods have been, as it present, most unethical. We assert that if the demands of
Local 37. I.W.A. were granted, that the em ployees 100% become members of said
Local, the Company would be placed on the unfair list by the United Brotherhood of
Carpenters and Joiners, and that the sale of the Company product would be so cur
tailed as to force a shutdown or at best a 50% reduction of manufacture.
We have no quarrel with Local 37. I.W.A., or with its individual members, but we
did not VfOte to strike and whatever of loss to the employees of this plant, there has
been or may be, is the result of their actions, not ours.
We have notified our employer of our willingness to work at any time we are
notified to report for duty.
We believe that a strike at this time is not the desire of a majority of the em-
ployees but was agitated in its inception by desire to get some money into their
treasurer, that the agitation was and is fostered by a minority group whose sole
purpose is to stir up trouble and disaffection among the employees and not to better
conditions, hours or wages of the workers.
45c
Local 37, I.W.A. has never obtained for its members any betterment of such
conditions, hours or wages, but is coasting along under benefits granted to the A. F.
of L. before the split in the organization.
TO THE MEMBERS OF LOCAL 37, I.W.A.—
15c
We ask careful, thoughtful consideration of the matters at issue, decide for your-
selves who is to blame for this shutdown and if it was advisable or justifiable.

Realizing the value of public opinion in any emergency involving the inherent
right of any group of citizens to exercise such privilege as may be granted by law, we
wish to place squarely before the public our position in the controversy between the
Oregon-American I.umber Corporation and its employees.
We base our contention on the following facts:
We contend that we are within our rights when we maintain a Local Union
affiliated with the A. F. of L.. and that such right cannot be denied us under the
present laws.
