There are two important facts
about syphilis that every one ought
to know.
First:
It
Kill. and
Disables—
Syphilis is a serious and preval
ent communicable disease, an every
day health problem to the indivi
dual, his town, and to that largest
oommunity, our own United States.
If it is not treated, or is inadequate
ly treated, it kill's or disables a
very large number of people.
Among those whom it kills are
thousands of babies, who are born
dead or do not long survive aftei
birth. Fifteen per cent of all our
blind are among those whom it dis
ables. It is the cause of 10 per
cent of insanity. It is responsible
for a large proportion of diseases
of heart and blood vessels, for
many apoplectic and parlytic stroke«
diseases of the“ nervous system
such as locomotor ataxia, and num
erous other serious conditians. It
strikes most viciously at youth,
three-quarters of all infections be-
ing acquired between 16 and 30
years of age. It decreases earning
capacity and length of life.
And finally, we all pay directly
in dollars for this terrific waste of
human material by taxation to sup
port institutions for the blind, th»
insane and crippled, and to aid
syphilitic indigents. Indirectly w.
all bear the burden of the lessened
fitness of society because of this
plague.
