HOTS
SEASIDE IN COUNTY
LEAGUE NOW—
A formal decision last Monday-
evening at a meeting of coaches
ard instructors of different schools
in the county formally placed in
effect ths idea of admitting Sea
side into the league of teams for
merly composed only from schools
within the Columbia county dis
trict.
By the vote the number of teams
available for competition is brought
from will
which
to six which
prove to an form
easier a
number of contests, Previous to
schedule the number has been so
this time to make it impossible tc*
small as entire season with games
without
fill an seeking competition from
cutside teams. This problem will be
out now to some extent and will
give fans, whether it be footbal',
basketball, track or something else,
a chance to see more competition
towards a league championship.
COLUMBIA LEAGUE, NOT
COLUMBIA CO. LEAGUE—
Along with the decision to lei
Seaside in came a change in title.
No more will “Columbia County
League” grace publicity items rela
tive to member school’s activities.
It will be known just as the “Col
umbia League” and so it should be
for Seaside does not come within
boundary lines of Columbia county
itself.
I
IA MORAL VICTORY FOR
¡VERNONIA—
Certainly Rainier captured the
high count for last Saturday’s fracas
with the Loggers but she didn’t
gain the enlarged count that has
been so prevalent in most all other
Rainier games this season. And that
surely means something when Ver
nonia wasn’t rated a show at thte
shuffle.
That proves one thing that the
dopesters on football can easily ’
lose their shirts when it comes
figuring the future from the past.1
Just remember what resulted bet-!
ween Scappoose and Seaside last i
Saturday—a scoreless tie— and
after what Scappoose did to Pacific-
University’s freshman outfit last
week. Pacific went down 13 to 6. 1
PAUL’S DISPOSITION
IS BETTER NOW—
Even if Rainier ¿id go home with
another victory this time at the
expense of Vernonia, Coach Paul
Gordon has a better disposition than
he has had for some time. He knows
row that the boys can do something
tc their credit even agaipst heavy
odds and that makes the future
look less dark especially after Clats
kanie bowed to the wood choppers.
BASKETBALL CITY LEAGUE
GETS TALK—
Not much to be sure but some
talk has been floating around as
co the possibilities of a city basket
ball league this winter. One entry
is assured, a team from the teach
ers and that although small, is a
beginning. There’s plenty of time
yet to do something about it, and
plenty of time to iron out all the
details, but is does no harm to keep
the idea in mind.

TEACHERS
DECISION TAKEN AT
TEACHER’S MEETING
MONDAY
Principals and instructors repre
senting different schools of the
county at a meeting Monday even
ing voted another school into the
group formerly comprising the Col-
umbia county league to, in the
future, form a league of six teams.
Formerly the number has been five,
Vernonia, St. Helens, Clatskanie,
Rainier and Scappoose.
The new name added, that f
Seaside, will be a permanent fea
ture of the newly formed league
with the action to take effect this
season. Seaside has games scheduled
vith all the county teams but only
is a fill-in date and not as a regu
lar member of the group.
In voting the newcimer to the
league the name was also changed
to be known in the future as the
Columbia League.
The action was taken at the
monthly meeting of the school-
master’s club, held this month at
Rainier.

Losing what amounted to > pract-.
ically a win considering scores
made by Rainier against other
teams in the county league, the
Vernonia Loggers dropped their
Saturday contest here by a 14 to 0
score with the river team. So far
during the season Rainier has been
in the habit of walking away easily
with every game they played but
Saturday changed that picture to
the extent that they left the grid
iron with only 14 points to the
good.
Vernonia’s attack during the aft-
ernoon consisted very largely of
passes thrown by Bill Byers anil
Vic LaPorte with a large percent
age of them being completed for
a considerable gain in yardage.
Although boasting a line averag I
ing several pounds heavier than the
Vernonia forward wall, when it Ii
became necessary to stop a yard
age advance to prevent first down
the Loggers were able to stiffen to
an extent sufficient to accomplish
that end.
By a stiff schedule of practice
sessions Coach Gordon has succeed-
ed to a large extent in grinding
the team into form which may see
Vernonia near the top position at
the close of the county league sea
son. Counting the game this Satur
day with Sheridan there yet re
mains three contests in the season
for football enthusiasts.
Besides
Sheridan, Scappoose and Seaside
yet remain on the list, Scappoose
due here October 29 and Seaside
there on November 11.

LUNCHES
SHERIDAN NAMED
TO FILL GAME
VACANCY SATURDAY
Through a miscalculation in
schedule arrangements of Hills
boro authorities the game there
this Saturday for the Loggers
was called, for as it was stated
by Hillsboro, some trouble had
resulted making it impossible
for them to play. Warning of
the no game prospect for this
weekend brought quick action
by Vernonia athletic circles
with the result that Sheridan
was finally contacted. Having
an open space the game was
immediately taken and the Log
gers will go there Saturday.
Little information can be ob
tained as to Sheridan's show
ing so far this season but it
is thought that the game will
not prove too difficult.
i.ge and this is his first year of.
steady turn out with the Loggers. |
Alternating with Baker is Millis
who rates as a good offensive man,
having proved himself capable in
this bracket through a year’s ex
perience previous to the present sea-
s<n. In addition to rating as valu
able offensive material Millis holds
ths honor of being the fastest man
on the field. Millis is 16 years of
age and weighs 155 pounds approxi
mately.
The remaining Junior member of
the squad is Melvin Powell who
serves as an alternate end, this be
ing his first year on the field. So
far during the season he has shown
numerous possibilities for develop
ment and should with a good deal
of work be able to show a high
rating in play for the coming year. I
Powell is aged 16 and weighs 160.

Junior Names Number Loie on
Football Squad Listing
The names of only three juniors
Lave appeared during the season as
regularly active for participation in
the Vernonia Logger football prac-
■ ice sessions, it was revealed to Th?
Eagle by Paul Gordon, coach. Of
these three names only one can be
designated as having had more tha 1
>ne year of experience previous to
-his. One of them did acquire some
practice last season but only at
intervals and was not a steady par
ticipant in squad activities.
Two of the boys alternate for
the one backfield position not al
ready occupied, one halfback pox".
Jack Baker serves a portion of th',
time with Phillip Millis having the
remaining time. Baker has proved
himself the most capable during
defense tactics so is usually in the
game when the team is on defen-
sive. He weighs 160. is 17 years of
Normal team. He ia a brother of
Mrs. Buster Byers of Riverview.
