Soon, like so many fixtures of the passing generation, such as the dried-pota to as cure for rheumatism and the drooping sidewhisker, he’ll be an extinct species. In my earliest recollections of travel he has a fond place, along with the lunch put up in a congress shoe box, the cinder in the eye and the smell which made every day coach remind you of a woodpecker’s nest. On almost the first car trip I ever made unaccompanied 'twas he who sold me a sealed volume entitled "The Jolly Old Drummer’s Spicy Library,” with a whispered warn ing not to break the wrapper be fore leaving the train for fear of arrest. I remember my guilty feel ing, my youthful thrill of anticipa tion. I got my money’s worth right there. I didn’t get it, later, because there was nothing in that book you couldn’t read at a meeting of the ladies’ aid with impunity. He was indeed an engaging scoundrel and engaging scoundrels grow increasingly scarce. There’s nothing picturesque about an “in vestment counselor” doing business with the aid of a sucker list and a new issue of Bull Con. preferred. • • • 1. The torrid. 2. Dusk. 3. HERE are certain things a woman has to put up with and be a good sport. Men, because they are men, can never understand a three-quarter wife—a wife who is all love and kindness three weeks in a month and a hell cat the rest of the time. No matter how your back aches —no matter how loudly your nerves scream—don’t take it out on your husband. For three generations one woman has told another how to go "smil ing through" with Lydia E. Pink ham’s Vegetable Compound. It helps Nature tone up the system, thus lessening the discomforts from the functional disorders which women must endure in the three ordeals of life: 1. Turning from girlhood to womanhood. 2. Pre paring for motherhood. 3. Ap proaching “middle age.” Don’t be a three-quarter wife, take LYDIA E. PINKHAM’S VEGETABLE COMPOUND and Go “Smiling Through.’’ T Ugly Railroad Stations Joy in Accomplishment O MATTER which way you’re going, it seems you must Find your joy in what you do— change trains in Chicago, and near not in what you intend to do. N ly always, change stations as well. Chicago proudly boasts of more railroad stations and uglier ones and situated at more remote and inconvenient intervals from one an other than any city anywhere. It’s as though once upon a time she set out to collect the largest covey of truly homely stations in the world and then the bunch flushed and scat tered on her. Yet as far as I can find out—cor rect me if I err—there’s no struc tural reason why through cars on most lines could not be switched directly to the connecting lines with If muscles in your legs, arms, chest, out being brought into the heart of back or shoulders feel stiff and sore, get a bottle of Hamlins Wizard Oil and get the city. C. _________ I RECORD OF FLOCK REVEALS PROFITS Facts on Production an Aid to Poultryman. By C. J. Maupin. Extension Poultry Spe cialist, North Carolina State Collese. WNU Service. "How much profit am I making? What return can I expect from my laying flock next month? Next year?” These are questing constantly coming before the poâùryman. The only way to find the answer is to keep records on the flock. Without records, there is no way of deter mining just what the-flock is doing. Good records show the cost of feeding the flock; 'the gross and net returns, and the average egg production. Records made with the aid of trap-nests also show the pro duction of individual birds. A poultryman must know these things before he can tell whether his system of feeding and manage ment is getting proper results. Records often show when the flock needs to be culled. If a large num ber of hens snows no profit, the low producers should be sent to market. Properly used, the record will tell the story from month to month. If the birds are being fed well and are in good health, yet do not lay satisfactorily it may be that they are not of a good breed or strain, or it may be that type of birds is not suited to the farm where they are located. Don’t buy a highly advertised breed of chicks, then trust to luck that they will produce profitable quantities of eggs. How the Feed Produces Different Meat Quality Each of the basic cereals—corn, wheat, oats, and barley — if fed alone, produces a different qual ity in the meat of poultry, says a writer in the Montreal Herald. Such differences are due to the way in which the fat is produced in the different parts of the body. An even distribution of fat throughout the body, flesh and skin, is essential tc high quality. The mixed cereals, plus milk, produce a high quality meat on an economical basis. The character and amount of the rations fed will largely influence the gains in live weight. The amount of protein in the ration does not necessarily indicate the value in possible live weight gains to be made. Neither does the amount of fat in the average fattening ration supply all the fat produced on the bird fed. It is common knowledge that the large deposits of fat which occur in the. animal body must owe their formation, in a large part, to other constituents of the feed than the fat content. In many finishing rations the low fat content cannot account for the high percentage of fat in the finished carcass. Recent biochemical work ha. «hnwn that certain of the decomposition prod ucts of carbohydrates may be uti lized in this synthesis of fat. The carbohydrate of the ration, in ex cess of that used for immediate heat and energy, is converted to fat and stored in deposits for later utilization. /<QClY2e By ' Gracie Allen Spinach Cup Cake Take four cups of flour and put them in one cup * * * and add three spoons. Then stir until stiff, and when you’re too stiff to’ stir, then you know you’re stiff. Then rub in a little liniment. But, of course, it won’t make the cake taste any better. He is George Volkoff, an exiled Russian aboard the British steamship Baron Blytheswood. After tramping about Europe for 11 years in a vain effort to find a country will ing to adopt him, Volkoff boarded the Baron Blytheswood in Poland. That was more than a year ago. He has since visited many lands, but nowhere can he find a country to call his own. Nor is Volkoff the only man without a country. The ships of many nations are now plying the seas with stowaways aboard who have no country. The captains are as anxious to get rid of most of them as the men are to leave, but as matters stand, the sea which has provided them with sanctuary may also be their grave.—Detroit, Free Press.
