PAGE FOUR VERNONIA EAGLE, The Open Forum To The Editor: Attorney Herman', Record In reply to certain statements made by Fred Herman in the Vernonia Eagle, which cannot be proved by the legislative records of the Legislature. Herman’s statement that my income tax bill would have taxed the single man $13 is erroneous. The tax on a single man would have been $7.60 and not $13.00. Under the Sales Tax Bills which Mr. Herman defends, and voted for three times, the tax on a single man and men with a family I would have been $15.60, with out any exemption. The Sales Tax Bills that Mr. Herman voted for exempted public utilities and nearly all big business. The rec ords in the Secretary of State’s office shows that big business contributed $17,480 in support of the Sales Tax campaigns. Organ ized Labor, the Grange, and Farmers Union, have always op posed a Sales Tax. I voted a- gainst every Sales Tax bill in the Legislature. I offered to de bate Attorney Herman, my op ponent, or any one else he might designate, in four debates re garding his legislative record against mine; meetings to be held at Clatskanie, Vernonia, Rainier and St. Helens. Surely if Attorney Herman had any leg islative record to compare with mine he would not have to re fuse to debate a farmer, logger and carpenter by trade, in his home town. Herman's Voting Record Attorney Herman, Republican Candidate, voted four times to “Soak the Farmer and Wage Worker.” Mr. Herman voted for Sales Tax House Bill No. 554 on OCTOBER 30, 1936 VERNONIA, OREGON March 2, 1933 and the people rate of interest and 2 per cent voted at a Special Election al penalty on delinquent taxes, most 4 to 1 agaisst the Sales which would have added an ex Tax Bill.
