Warning Signs Ordered for
Each Intersection on
Bridge Street
Recent automobile accidents in
town impelled the city council at
a special meeting Monday night
to take steps for enforcement of
the traffic ordinances. These in­
clude designation of Bridge street
as a stop street, prohibiting of U
turns on Bridge street and res­
triction of the speed limit to 20
miles an hour. For the informa­
tion of the public the council or­
dered three speed limit signs to
be erected at the city boundar­
ies, five no U turn signs and
12 ¿top signs for intersections
on Bridge street.
W. H. Kent, water superintend­
ent, was authorized to buy a
magnetic switch for the sewer
disposal plant.

Sarah Collins Dies
Of Apoplexy

Sarah Collins, 73, mother of
Mrs. Nettie Nichols of Vernon­
ia, died at her daughter's home
here August 10 of aploplexy.
Services were held yesterday in
Brown’s mortuary, and interment
was in Forest Grove.
She was born March 13, 1863,
in Monona, Iowa, and married
Joseph Collins in 1910. Mr. Col­
lins passed away in 1929, aiid
since then Mrs. Collins spent
her time at the homes of her
three daughters. She came to
Vernonia in 1931 to visit Mrs.
H. Froembling, but at present
was with Mrs. Nichols.
Surviving are four children,
George Collins of Columbia, Neb.,
Mrs. Esther Moe of Bellingham,
Wash., Mrs. Nettie Nichols, Ver­
nonia, and Mrs. Gladys Froemb­
ling of Portland, besides ten
grandchildren.

Christian Churches
To Meet at Big Eddy
The First Christian church of
Vernonia will unite with the St.
Helens Christian church and the
Bible schools of the lower Ne­
halem valley on Sunday next in
a union service at Big Eddy park.
The services will begin at the
usual hour, and the conveyances
will leave the church here at 8 :30
o’clock. Those attending are re­
quested to take their own knives,
forks, plates, spoons and cups.
The picnic dinner will be served
at 12 noon, and the afternoon
will be given over to fellowship
and recreation. The Christian En­
deavor society will hold their
meeting at the park at 7 o’clock.
There will be no services during
the day in the church in town.
A very delightful day is being
anticipated.

To Picnic Here
The Columbia County Odd Fel­
lows association will hold a pic­
nic at Arcadia park Sunday. Dr.
H. M. Bigelow, C. C. Brown and
George W. Johnson are the com­
mittee in charge of arrange­
ments.
On the sports program “Mor­
gan and his Men” from Portland
will play a softball game against
a pickup team captained by La
Verne Adams.

burg to attend the state conven­
tion.
Progress towards securing an

meeting Monday night by J. W.
Nichols. Mr. Nichols will meet
with committees from different
organizations to confer regarding
methods of raising the money.

struck an electric light pole,

Marjorie Loraine Hofenrehl, in­
fant daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Louis Hofenrehl of Treharne,
died Friday of heart trouble. She
was born May 19, 1935, at Stay­
ton, Ore. Services were held Sat­
urday at Stayton.
