C. F. Hieber Suggests Plan
To Charge Fee for Each
Check that is Cashed
Forming of an exchange bank
for the cashing of checks was
discussed in the chamber of com
merce meeting Tuesday noon, and
a committee composed of E. M.
Bollinger, A. L. Kullander and
T. M. Crawford was appointed
by President Sam Hearing to
appear before the city council
and ask for use of the bank
building for the purpose.
The plan was outlined by C. F.
Hieber, who expressed the opin
ion that there is no chance of
the establishment of a branch
bank in Vernonia at present, and
that the only feasible method
of taking care of payroll checks
would be through an exchange
that would charge a small fee
for the cashing of checks. The
sum of $10,000 would finance
the proposition, he believed. The
money would not be tied up per
manently, he explained, but
would merely be kept on hand
pay days for the cashing of
checks.
There was some discussion as
to the practicability of the ser
vice charge, several of the mem
bers expressing the opinion that
it could not be exacted.
