Saturday Bouts
Well Attended
Magoff Lote» Decision to Ryan
From C. C. C. Camp
One of the largest crowds ever
to attend an event in the Legion
hall is estimated to have been
present at the bouts Saturday
night between C. C. C. boys from
Wilark and local boxers. Seats
were all occupied, and many had
to stand up. 84 attended from the
camp.
In the main event Jack Ryan,
C. C. C. boy of no mean ability as
a fighter, won by a decision over
Joe Magoff. Ryan handled him
self well but was apparently out
of condition and gave the im
pression of being able to go much
faster than he did.
In the preliminaries Smith, C.
C. C., won over Milton, C. C. C.,
and Phipps, C. C. C., won from
Pullen, C. C. C. Both of these
bouts went three rounds to a
decision.
Red Sesseman, Vernonia, won
from Hinniman, C. C. C., by a
technical knock-out in the second
round, Hinniman sustaining a
couple of fractured ribs. Ken
Parker, Vernonia, won by decision
from Ferrias, C. C. C., Dane
Brady, Vernonia, knocked out
Evans, C. C. C., in the first
round. Ole Tichenor, Vernonia
failed to appear against Parks,
C. C. C., and forfeited the bout.
Three hundred more seats will
be put on the Legion hall floor,
says E. M. Murphy, manager, so
that all can be accommodated.
The next match will be on th»
29th, with Swede Nelson, Dane
Brady, Ken Parker and Joe Ma
goff participating, and a return
match with the Wilark C. C. C.
will be held August 5.
An added attraction at the
match on the 29th will be a
wrestling match in which Bert
Hall of Camp 8 will try to throw
as many men as can be found to
wrestle with him in an hour.
Dividend Is
Declared on
Bank Claims
Commercial Depositors to
Get 10%, Savings
15%
A dividend of ten per cent on
deposits in the commercial de
partment and 15 per cent in the
savings department of the Bank
of Vernonia will be distributed
beginning next Friday to deposi
tors who filed their claims up to
and including June 23, it was an
nounced Wednesday by W. M.
Adair, deputy superintendent of
banks in charge of liquidation.
Authority for the dividend was
received that morning from Judge
H. K. Zimmerman of the circuit
court.
This is the first dividend that
has been declared since the fail
ure of the bank June 24, 1932.
Payment was retarded by the
failure of the Columbia County
bank in St. Helens, sums to the
credit of the Bank of Vernonia
in liquidation having been de
posited in that institution. Under
the law they were a preferred
claim, payable in full, but it was
necessary to liquidate certain as
sets of that bank before the
money could be available to those
who held claims against the Bank
of Vernonia.
It will not be necessary to call
at the bank in order to obtain
one’s dividend, as checks will be
mailed.
Weather Helps
Lessen Hazard
Dangerous Blas» Below Big Eddy
1* Checked
Increased humidity Tuesday
and Wednesday greatly reduced
the fire hazard, and assisted ma
terially in checking a menacing
fire that broke out in the Clark
and Wilson operations below Big
Eddy on Monday afternoon. The
fire spread over 40 acres, and
was fought by all the available
employes. During the night it was
brought under control. No men
from the C. C. C. camps were
used in this fire.
