30 miles from a trading post. I. P. Spencer and his bride, Mrs. Sarah Spencer, arrived from Missouri in 1880. Mrs. Spencer was the first bride in Nehalem valley. She was one of the first leaders and is still a leader known locally as “Aunt Sally.” Mr. Spencer was the first justice of the peace. Judson Weed was another well known leader. In 1880 he served as representative in Congress. In 1890 a store was built which served later as the Clive Mill’s residence. In 1928 this building was torn down to make room for large modern buildings. In 1881 the William Hess fami ly from Ohio arrived. They took a homestead three miles west of Vernonia, on the Beaver Creek road. Mr. Hess died in 1929 of ’vi’!**? pneumonia, but his son still re sides on the old Hess homestead.
