o NUMBER 24 VERNONIA, OREGON, FRIDAY, JANUARY 9, 1931. VOLUME 9 Wind Storm Worst Known In 35 Years ,5 Vernonia Shut off from all Communication for Some Time What is regarded as the worst wind storm in the history of Vernonia, short of some 36 years ago, occurred Monday morning. Although there were many nar row escapes, no I osb of life is reported. A large number of trees apparently staunch were completed uprooted. For several hours Vernonia was shut off from the outside world. The morning train came in about three hours late, with two men riding the locomotive cowcatcher armed with cross cut saws. The crew report hav ing to saw ten or twelve logs that had fallen across the track, the first one occurring between Five Manning and Top Hill. more had to be removed between here and Keasey. The Portland-Vernonia truck coming in from Forest Grove reported about a dozen trees across the road, four between here and Timber. To,.. mechanic employed by the Gil by Motor company, was blocked by a tree in front of him while on his way from Forest Grove the other side of Timber, and on turning _ back to get a saw found that a tree had fallen to the south of him. H« thereup on returned to the first tree until relief came. The road was cleared between nine and ten that morning, but telephone com munication with Forest Grove and Portlond was out until 11:30 Tuesday morning. The worst blockade was on the St. Helens road, which was not cleared until 2:30 or three in the afternoon. Cars lined up at both ends, the first one about a half mile this side of the crusher. The worst trouble, said Pete Bergerson, road supervisor, was on the logged-off areas where few standing trees receiv ed the full sweep of the wind. The stage which left Vernonia at eight in the morning was un able to reach Portland until five in the evening. The afternoon stage from Portland, however, was not delayed. Lines of the Oregon Gas and Electric company were damaged to the extent of about $1000, according to the estimate of Geo. W. Ford, manager. Vernonia it self was fortunate in that the power here was interrupted only seven minutes, but the last of the rural lines was not back in service until Wednesday. Lines in every direction were damaged by falling trees and limbs, from the end of the line at Timber to Camp McGregor. All day Monday and Tuesday morning there was no telephone communication to outside points. The line to Mist was resumed Wedsesday afternoon. GILBERT BERGERSON AWARDED LETTER OREGON STATE COLLEGE, Corvallis,—Gilbert Bergerson of Vernonia has just been awarded his first letter in varsity foot ball by the board of athletic con trol here.
