much, however, ought papers to publish crime news?
Should they ignore murder, triangles, debauchery?
By no means. Good policy in a small town may im­
pel an editor to refrain from printing items that lower a
man in the eyes of his neighbors—that pillory him, as
it were, for the whole community to jeer at.
The newspaper in the big city, however, has a wider
sphere of action, with the element of personality left out.
So great is the crowd that the individual, however impor­
tant in his own eyes and in those of his friends, is rela-l
tively obscure. Despite unfavorable publicity, he can still
walk the streets without turning his eyes from every man
he meets.
Not so complete is the escape, however, as to render'
