I of Vernonia’s new post office started construction in earnest this week. It is predicted that the new post office would have been about half completed, had not weather conditions forced the contract rs to discontinue their work. Const, action on the new office building of Gordon R. Watt will also start this week. Little can be learned whether Claus Messing of Portland in tends to construct his new build ing within the near future, al though masy rumors have been afloat that several local business men have recently attempted to purchase the former Stewart' property from Mr. Messing. It is probable that during the month of February the school board of district 47 will ask for bids for the construction of the new *75,000 Washington grade school, on which construction will start during the latter part of April. Reports released by Ray Early last fall that construction would start January 1 on the new building of his father, which would house the J. C. Penney company, are now changed. The company expects to open here in the fall. Shorthand Class Makes Good Progress A Shorthand club has been or ganized under the direction of Miss Ruth Martin. It consists of the students studying in ker shorthand classes. The club has met twice, two weeks ago last Wednesday and a week ago Thursday. The meet ings are held at the homes of the different members of the club. The girl at whose home the meeting is held takes charge of the meeting. The girls are asked to make any suggestions which they think willl be helpful in learning shorthand more rapidly. They study and read shorthand and take dictation. Ffach girl has subscribed to the Gregg Writer, a shorthand magazine. This is used somewhat as a text boo* at the meetings. The meetings usually last about two hours, after which re- freshmen ts are served. Miss Martin stated that ahe was very much pleased with the work the girls are doing and the interest they are taking. If anyone in town is interest ed in the Shorthand club, they are invited to attend the meet ings.
