Legionnaire Carkill, a charlei memUer of Vernonia post, und a charter member of Voiture 901 of La Societe des 40 Homme* el 8 Chevaux, earned the repu tation as one of the best mem bership getters in the noi thwest, and recently was honored by the state department, receiving a gold medal for bringing m over 100 new members in 1929, the only Legionnaire in Oregon thus honored. Throughout the state in Lo- gion circles, Catkin is the bjyi known Legionnaire in ColumoiM county and in the state and at every state convention has been an important factor in the elec tion of different Legion state officials. It is predicted by Sid George, state commander of Oregon, and Carl Moser, department adjutant, that Oregon, this year .will reach its peak in membership exceed ing even 1929, under the mem bership chairmanship of general chairman Carkin. A member of a famous Can- adisn regiment, Carkin served in the Canadian forces, dyerseas for tie full Suratiou <ii the World s war, enlisting in 1914. During one of the major engage ments at the front near Ypres, Carkin was wounded. Vernonia post and Voiture now has two representatives in state departments, II. E. Mc Graw, us Grand Cheminot of the Grand Voiture and M. E. Carkin as general membership chairman of the department of Oregon, of the A merican Legion.
