Friday afternoon, Miss Alley, county health nurse and charity worker in Columbia county, ad- dressed the sociology class concern ing the work of the county health nurse. Miss Alley said that the work of a health nurse is of most difficult nature unless the parents would co operate wholeheartedly with her. “It is the duty of the health nurse to go to the public schools and examine the students. She learns the condition of the chil dren’s teeth, eyes, tonsils, etc. If the children need any medical at tention, the health nurse reports it to the child’s parents, but that is as far as she can go. If the parents refuse to have anything done, the nurse has no power to force them to take care of the child except in cases of contagion, when it be- comes her duty to quarantine. Although the public school is the most widely known branch of her work, a health nurse has many more duties than this. She is con stantly working for the American Red Cross in their nation wide ■ campaign for prevention of disease and sickness. “Another phase of a health nurse’s work is to investigate charity cases. Every family who applies to the county judge for re lief is investigated thoroughly be fore relief is given. Persons having relatives or property or any other means of securing money are not given aid. It goes only to those who really need it.” Miss Alley also told about the way social service institutions work and cooperate with each other.—E. T. who can this woman? S Joy Theatre Februory Out Now!
