THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20. 19 28 VERNONIA EAGLE, VERNONIA, OREGON FOUR ting marsmallows and dried fruits such as raisins, dates, etc. Sc -ded raisins may be separated easil. by washing the whole pack age under the cold water faucet. A mixture of flour and sugar dusted over the bottom crust of a pie before adding fruit or other filling prevents the filling from soaking the crust. New popcorn, or popcorn that is damp, need not be dried out be- fore popping, as is usually done. If you have recently gathered your corn or if it has been left in a damp room, and you wish to use it right away, shell a few ears and1 put it in a bowl of water for ten minutes. It will pop readily, and the flakes will be crisp and nice. Tuberculosis charity than were at first known. Only a few have turn ed in donations to the Christmas tree fund, and it is doubful whether there will be enough to carry on the work properly. Members of the Legion plan to devote part of Christmas day to see that all needy families are sup plied with clothing for children and groceries, if that is their greatest need. The little tots who can not help their predicament are the greatest sufferers and will receive the greatest consideration. BUY IN VERNONIA Now that the time is drawing to a close for the Christmas buying, we wish again to call your attention to the value of buying in Vernonia whenever it is pos sible. If any of you have been discouraged from buy ing at home because of inability to get the articles de sired, that difficulty has decreased much less thah at any time in the past. Vernonia merchants are prepared this year to serve you better than ever before, which has already been in dicated by the fact that in most stores many of their most expensive Christmas stocks are rapidly being purchased. The more you buy at home, the more confidence the local merchants will have in trade and the better accomodations and choice the consumers will receive. The Nehalem valley’s other newspaper, at Wheeler, Oregon, is deserving of much praise for their “progress” edition of last week, in which 28 pages were devoted to news and advertising concerning the lower Nehalem section of Oregon. Editor G. B. Nunn has gone to con siderable exp. nse to tell thers ab< ill his town. We hope it will be advertising well directed. Home Pointer. To make peanut brittle porous, add one-fourth teaspoon of soda to two cups of caramelized sugar be fore the nuts are added. Corn syrup, cream of tarter, lem on juice, vinegar and acetic acid may be used to help make fudge, penuchi or fondant creamy. Crystals which have formed on the sides of the saucepan in which candies are cooking may be washed away with cheesecloth wrapped around a fork. Always lay a glass thermometer on a damp cloth. If laid on a cold slab or table it may break. Pour candies which are to be cut into a square pan so that all the pieces can be cut the same size. The meats from pecan nuts may bo removed easily and whole by putting the nuts into a pan of wa ter and boiling fifteen minutes. Very little effort will then bring the kernels out whole. This does not injure the flavor of the nuts. Floured scissors are good for cut- Terrible Tuberculosis in livestock is a de ceptive disease. Unlike most other livestock diseases, which cause visi ble symptoms and arouse immediate alarm among livestock owners, tu berculosis is generally slow in de veloping and its symptoms are not easily recognized from the appear ance of the animals, so many peo ple mistakenly believe that it does comparatively little harm. Early eradication is the most economical way to combat the disease. Have he herd tested, says the Bureau of Animal Industry, U. S. department jf agriculture, and then keep the disease out. Means by which tuber culosis is introduced into a healthy ierd are by adding animals affect ed with the disease; by feeding alves with unpasteurized milk or other dairy products from tuber culosis cows; by showing cattle at fairs and exhibitions; by shipping animals in cars which have recent ly carried diseased cattle and which have not been properly disinfected; ind by using community pastures. Do not add cattle to your herd inlets you know they are from tu- berculosis-free herds, or herds un der supervision for the eradication of the disease. Greenhouse Best for Plants The equipment for growing young plants of various vegetables has be come modernized almost as fast as the automobile. A few years ago the manure hotbed was used ex tensively, today small propagating greenhouses are used. There is hardly any question concerning the greater efficiency of the green houses for plant- growing not to ! mention the greater care and com fort in doing of the work. A grower of young plants recently reported that a greenhouse 21 by 25 feet, seven feet high at eaves, 12 feet high at the' ridge, and of concrete and pipe frame construction, with hot water system and sawdust burn er cost him $500 for actual ma terial not including labor. Plans for such greenhouses may be obtained from the department of vegetable gardening at Oregon State college Rent Additional Land Many farmers could increase their incomes by renting additional land for next year. It pays to keep chincry ami help busy, points the management department at experiment station.
