A mixture of flour and sugar dusted over the bottom crust of a pie before adding fruit or other filling prevents the filling from soaking the crust. New popcorn, or popcorn that is damp, need not be dried out be- fore popping, as is usually done. If you have recently gathered your corn or if it has been left in a damp room, and you wish to use it right away, shell a few ears and1 put it in a bowl of water for ten minutes. The Nehalem valley’s other newspaper, at Wheeler, Oregon, is deserving of much praise for their “progress” edition of last week, in which 28 pages were devoted to news and advertising concerning the lower Nehalem section of Oregon. If laid on a cold slab or table it may break. Pour candies which are to be cut into a square pan so that all the pieces can be cut the same size. The meats from pecan nuts may bo removed easily and whole by putting the nuts into a pan of wa ter and boiling fifteen minutes. Very little effort will then bring the kernels out whole. Unlike most other livestock diseases, which cause visi ble symptoms and arouse immediate alarm among livestock owners, tu berculosis is generally slow in de veloping and its symptoms are not easily recognized from the appear ance of the animals, so many peo ple mistakenly believe that it does comparatively little harm. Early eradication is the most economical way to combat the disease. Have he herd tested, says the Bureau of Animal Industry, U. S. department jf agriculture, and then keep the disease out. Means by which tuber culosis is introduced into a healthy ierd are by adding animals affect ed with the disease; by feeding alves with unpasteurized milk or other dairy products from tuber culosis cows; by showing cattle at fairs and exhibitions; by shipping animals in cars which have recent ly carried diseased cattle and which have not been properly disinfected; ind by using community pastures. Do not add cattle to your herd inlets you know they are from tu- berculosis-free herds, or herds un der supervision for the eradication of the disease. Greenhouse Best for Plants The equipment for growing young plants of various vegetables has be come modernized almost as fast as the automobile. A few years ago the manure hotbed was used ex tensively, today small propagating greenhouses are used. There is hardly any question concerning the greater efficiency of the green houses for plant- growing not to ! mention the greater care and com fort in doing of the work. A grower of young plants recently reported that a greenhouse 21 by 25 feet, seven feet high at eaves, 12 feet high at the' ridge, and of concrete and pipe frame construction, with hot water system and sawdust burn er cost him $500 for actual ma terial not including labor.
