MOE, Editor Courtesy, Savings and Service PETTY THIEVERY A number of cases of petty thievery have been re ported of late, such as stealing of milk, chickens, garden stuff and other small items. It seems that it is being done by one or more groups of young people, some of whom are said to be married, and that their sole purpose in do ing so is the thrill they derive by such acts. It is an especially sad circumstance coming so soon after the lecture of Chief Jenkins at the Evangelical church when he clearly showed by many illustrations that crime does not pay. No doubt these young people excuse their acts under the pretense that it does not con stitute crime, but is merely a series of pranks, for which they would only expect light punishment if caught or apprehended. Perhaps all of them will tire of the “sport” and in time become useful citizens. But the chances are about 20 to 1 that if they continue these practices at least one of them will become an habitual criminal. There is likely to be one who follows the crowd with such a slight sense of wrongdoing that his feelings toward society will soon become so calloused that he only cares for personal gain made easily, no matter what the cost to others. This one, and perhaps more, will likely made steal ing first a hobby and then a business from which he wilj never be divorced as long as he has liberty. And the question of liberty is more uncertain than anything else in his life, for such is the fate of one who leads a life of crime. It may be one day, two days, three days, a /veek, a. month, a year, but in the end he shall pay dearly for his waywardness in hard labor at the state peniten tiary. Those young people who are participating in these obnoxious practices of petty thievery should pause to consider what dire results their “fun” may lead to: A son or daughter following the wayward path, who has but a little while to go his selfish way, and then the ar rest, prosecution and imprisonment, leaving behind bro ken hearts and a famly of loved ones bowed down in shame. The commandment “Thou shalt not steal” implies more than just those four words, and challenges every man or woman who has stolen to stop the pernicious practice, which requires more courage than continuing it. Coach Austin’s basketeers will be seen in action for the first time this season on the local gymnasium floor against JBanks tomorrow night. A good turnout will encourage the team toward working hard for the county championship this year. That will be good for Vernonia. An injection of typhoid vaccine immediately by all persons in Vernonia dealing wth the public or handl ing commodities would be a wise step toward the pre vention of a typhoid epidemic in ths vicinity. Those who like smelt will be interested in hearing that variety of the piscatorial game have been caught already at Clatskanie.
