700 pupils in our schools, but see what the clerk’s report
was ten short years ago:
“Number of persons in the district under 20 years old

Number of school rooms, 2.
Number of legal voters in the district, 50.
Average monthly salary of teachers, $65..
Number of mills district tax levied, 10 mills.

THE HIGHWAY COMMISSION

investigation is apparent. Here is a clipping from the
Oregonian in a report of the meet of the highway com­
mission :
“For the first time in years a representative of Colum­
bia county appeared. Judge Philip asked that the com­
mission build a state highway through Nehalem valley,
via Timber and Mist to Birkenfeld. As it is not on the
state map, the commission can do nothing. Judge Philip
said that the county had been laying concrete pavement
on one of its rnai' > t >ad at the rate of one mile a year.”
