Too bad for all those de siring a bridge—but all hopes have vanished now. -------- o-------- Forest Grove, McMinnville and Hood River have long held about even honors on the excellence of their weekly papers—the oust papers published in Oregon. Last week, however, we are tempted to declare the Forest Grove News-Times the best weekly in the state. It’s full of live ads and just as live reading matter. ---------- o---------- Ask us to send you Frye's "Meat Guide.” 187 ways of cooking meat—and cakes and pastry, too. Here is a championship worth while! It beats all the beauty contests, because a pound of milk is a pound of milk, while beauty depends entirely on the point of view. This subject could be made into a lengthy editorial, but our readers probably are already “way ahead of us.” -------- o--------- “Traveling in the wilds of Vernonia” is dangerous busi ness, according to the news factory plant of the St. Hel ens Sentinel. We may have some wild ways over here; some wild women or wild men, yes, even wild animals back in the woods near St. Helens, but never yet heard of cougars eating any one in Vernonia. Here is what last week’s Sentinel reported: Cougar Attacks Man. While driving in the vicinity of Vernonia last Monday a big cougar leaped from an embankment beside the highway at the automomile of A. H. Shortes, a state traffic officer, according to a report of the- intended victim. Mr. Shortes saw the cat in time to “step on the gas,” and the animal barely missed landing on the automobile, its claws strik ing a rear tire. Others in that neighborhood report having seen cougars, but none report attacks. ---------- o---------- THE HOME NEWSPAPER The home newspaper, as an institution, has survived many difficulties; the onslaughts of opposition, the in crease in cost of publication, the peril of unpaid subscrip tions, the uncertainty of advertising patronage, the prob lems of competition, and the hazards of its own mistakes. Thru all this the home newspaper still lives. The news paper is a growth a development made possible by the cooperative and receptive spirit of the people. It is the echo of the community’s voice, a reflection of the com munity’s vision, a champion of the community’s right, and a direct avenue for the future business of the town. ---------- o---------- WHAT COOPERATION BUILT AD IN OUR CLASSIFIED COLUMNS THE WHITE FRONT------ West Bridge Street Come in and see us a MOTHER’S DAY—- J Political Announcements Mother’s Day gifts in a large assortment Mother’s Day Stationery, 98c Mother’s Day candy $1.25, $1.50, $2.25 box HEMSTITCHING TO THE VOTERS OF COLUMBIA COUNTY I wish to announce my candidacy for the nomination to the office of Representative on the Republican ticket at the primaries in May, and respectfully ask for your support.
