He was of some help about the place, too, from the time he was 7 years old, and when a father leaned across the checkered table cloth at supper time the evening before circus day and, putting a quarter in his sons hand, gave a few words of advice about staying out of trouble tomor row, he knew that while he would probably not see his son again for 36 hours the honor of the family would be maintained. He knew he wouldn’t have to stop his work to get the boy out of jail for speeding or for becoming too friendly with a bootlegger. There were no Boy Scouts and fresh air camps in those days, and no gymnasiums. But the fellow who has never stood barefoot in a pasture or orchard grass, or buried his toes in the cooling dust of a country road, with the rising sun bringing another bunch of freckles to distribute over his face, has missed something out of boyhood he can never put back. To day the world gives a lot to boyhood, but when we think of the boys of yes terday and then compare their joys with those of the boys of today we can’t help feeling that at the same time the world is giving them much it is witholding still more. It is not too early to suggest that you do yous Christmas Shopping Early. GASOLINE’’ Not very long ago there was fear fo dollar gasoline in this country. But today it would sound more sensi ble to talk of ten cent gasoline, for instead of growing scarcer the fuel has been constantly growing more Ipentiful; instead of getting dearer ti has been getting cheaper. We have just read a government report to the effect that figures gathered from 30 towns and cities in as many sections of the U. S. show an average price of 15c a gallon. If the Vernonia citizen who has contended that the day of the auto is soon to end unless a substitute car be found for gasoline will read ui he will find that he is wrong. As old oil fields and pools play out new ones are being opened. There have beer rich oil strikes this year in regions where they were not expected, an< ethre is probably far more crude oi. in the world than has ever been esti mated. At any rate the drillers an< refiners act as if the supply was in eshaustible. Low prices do not checl them, they keep right on increasing production at a time when market is glutted. That consumers are doing al they can to help them is seen in th» fact that the United States is usint 20 per cent more gasoline this yea than it used in 1923. Millions of gallons are wated, o course, and some day we may regre it. Yet men who make a study o. crude oil are not inclined to worry They have faith in the bounty of olu Mother Earth, giver of so many ric! gifts. And we have faith in our in ventors to believe that they will hav» a cheap substitute ready the minute that the world’s gasoline supply doe- give ou. BOYS OF OTHER DAYS Older Vernonia residents will free with us that a boy didn’t cost much in the days gone by. A pair of corduroys, a cotton waist and a lOt pair of suspenders made a wardrobe that came to less than a dollar. If ht ate a great deal he didn’t run up a odctor bill. A stonebruise a bad case of sunburn were ailments that never cost his father a cent. He did n’t have to have a dollar ’s worth - ------ ------- of — , salve and sterilized bandages every THE FINEST GIFT OF ALL The gift that keeps on going, something new each day. PHARMACY In Vernonia Hotel Building Opposite Qtiby Motor Company DON’T GET EXCITED We’ve recently read several arti cles to the effect that the country is about to enter a boom period, though none of the writers give any specific reason for such belief. We hope it is true, so long as tt is not the kind of boom that gives us great prosperity for a few months and then leaves the country in worse shape than it was before. Too many people, and we have some of them in Vernonia cannot realize that all the boom periods are of short duration. They commence to find money com ing in more plentifully, and they take it for granted that it is always go ing to comeeasy. As a result the boom eases off and they haven’t any thing, except possibily a lot of debts, to show for it. Thia is a good time in a minute!
