Every lover of law and order is saddened by the fact, with its significance in the flippant and open disrespect of law involved. The prohibition laws of the state and nation represent the serious and deliberate judgment of the majority of the people, and were enacted for the purpose of making humanity happier and better There is nothing fanatical in such a purpose. One phase of drunkenness quite escapes the tippler. He presses into every large gathering forcing himself to the front and making an ass of himself from first to last. He thinks he is very alert and keen; he fancies his tongue ripples out witticisms and sage remarks and he flatters himself that he is the very brightest star in the constellation of humanity. The fact is, he is an unmiti gated and intolerable nuisance. He is shunned by his friends as an unclean, stupid creature. His mind is dull and nrross and he is everywhere avoided as unfit to associate with intelligent persona. He is quarrelsome and brutish, clumsy and dirty. There is noth ing pleasing about him. You never see a sober man knowingly join a group of drunk ards; your often see a drunk crowd into an assembly of sober men, to their utter disgust The drinker knows all of this, when he is sober. But alcoholic liquor makes fools of moot men and they do not realize how the poison robs them of their high estate as human beings until they have passed from its debas ing influence.—Enterprise Rec ord Chieftain. We shall soon hit our stride then watch our smoke. October 29 the Seniors will meet the Juniors in the second game of the Doughnut series. The members of the Junior class were rewarded with dough nuts Wednesday as the emblems of our league. The proposed congti tution fo the Student Body ha» been posted and.at the meeting to be held Friday it will be accepted or re jected. The Junior-Senior basketball game ia co be played the night of October 29. The winner will play the Sophomore team, as it has defeated the Freshmen team. The Junior Class held a meet ing Monday, lhe purpose was to find ways of showing the other classes that the Juniors are not as dead as the other classes think. As one ma i put it yesterday: “I see a new house every day and it is a different house.” The statement is about true as the new houses in our city are plenty to average one a day. Lot values here are not high as com pared to Longview or other fast growing cities. Resident lota are selling from $75 to $300 and busi ness lots from $60 to $2000. Last week, one of the Keasey lots, east of Vernonia Hotel, sold for $1000 to a Mr. Bruce, who, we understand, also purchased two acres of Sydney Malmsten. We also hear that the Mrs. West cor ner at Rock Creek road, sold last week for $3500. This is a lOOx 100 piece and a good location for a large fire proof building. Since our last issue over a dozen resi dent lots are reported sold for new buildings for individuals and real estate men. Messrs. Win field & Scott will build a fire proof building on the corner re cently pu’-'’hascd of Mr. White. ..nd Mrs. Case contemplates the erection of a large building im mediately on the lot west of Mr. Richmond’s office.
