'4? Wrtttmia XaUred as accoad-claaa nutter Auguat 4, 1022, at the poet office at Vernonia, Oregon, nnder the Act of March 3, 1*79 Volume 2, Number 3 VERNONIA, OREGON, FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, 1923 MOUTHPIECE of the NEHALEM VALLEY GOOD READING FOR BUSY BUSINESS MEN SOME THOUGHTS WORTH WHILE ON ADVERTISING In a recent address made before the North Dakota Retail Merchants* con vention held at Minot, N. D., the fol lowing pertinent point, were pre sented by one of the member,, who ha, made a success in the mercantile field: Most of the big firms today, ninety- five per cent of them, have erected their gigantic business through adver tising, which was started in a very small way. The merchant who will advertise constantly, regardless of the amount of space he may purchase, and who is thoroughly sold on advertising, is the man who will achieve remarkabte re sults. It is by consistent, careful plan ning and good management, not by the size of the advertising campaign, that jjood results show up profitably. Therefore, the merchant who ha, only a small amount of money for adver tising available should not conclude that there is no use for him to adver tise. There H no better instance that I can cite than John Wanamaker, who, at the end of his first day’s business had sold $24.67 worth of goods, and the following day expended $24.00 for advertising and retained the 67c for change. Wanamaker practically pulled him self up by his boots. He passed away a short time ago, leaving an estate of $25,000,000. No merchant should be afraid to advertise by reason of the large fig ures that are quoted as to the cost of advertising campaigns today. Busi ness is no different today than it was twenty-five years ago. I have heard merchants repeatedly say, "What chance have I got to advertise against mail order houses, big department stores and such institutions.” But realize how Sears-Roebuck started spending less than a $10 bill in their first advertising campaign to sell watches. Consider also L. Wattcrman Com pany, a firm that spends hundred, of thousand, of dollar, on advertising today, and started out with an appro priation of $62.50. It is reported that the entire cap ital of Wm. Wrigley, the gum man, when he started out wa, $32.00. Only ■a few year, ago Wrigley expended *$500,000 in one advertising campaign an New York City alone. Repeatedly we read the advertise ments of the Royal Baking Powder Company and their wonderful suc cess. 1 am informed they started in a small way in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and that their first advertising cam paign consisted of a very small space in the local paper. Advertising cre ated expansion and finally the firm moved to New York City. .When a firm can sell its Root Beer at every soda fountain in the United States through advertising, it’s time the retail merchants set up and took notice. This is exactly what the Chas. E. Hire Company does, and they started with an advertising space of a few inches in the local paper. Yet today they are one of the biggest advertiser, in the country. Advertising—all good advertising— paints wonderful opportunities to the public, and draws results. These pic tures arc painted through words rightly chosen—mental pictures—that make us alive to new ideas which would otherwise remain lost in our brain. The word artist, truly as any artist with his paint brush and easel, paints his woods, fields, storms, his gloridus adventures, and through the mental pictures his words paint lead us into new fields of thought. This great sales garden which every merchant has can he cultivated through advertising, There are no copyrights or trade marks for any chosen ones; we all have the same privilege. It is the solemn duty of every mer chant to patronize his newspapers. The newspaper molds public opinion and there is no better profit bearing missionary in existence today than the newspaper. The newspaper is your right hand, and you should act as its left hand, In blending your thoughts, your ideas with your newspaper, your opportun- ity is equal to the richest comfort a retail merchant can enjoy. , ----- Paul Robinson, Editor and Owner COLUMBIA COUNTY--------- » Advertising Medium of a Big Pay Roll Community FROM KANSAS CITY NEAR FATAL AGCIDENT VERNONIA DAY NEXT MANY NEW HOUSES IN SIX and HALF DAYS IN R. The speeder was wrecked, most of the occupants jumped with no serious results. Mrs. Geo. Nel son stayed on the speeder, giving her at'.en ion to saving the child ren. As the collision struck it is difficult to say what happened. Mrs. Nelson was quite seriously injured; receiving a severe scalp wound, a badly cut and broken hand and severe nervous shock. It is intimated thit the engine and two cars passed over her, as she was rescued between the rails under the train. All hope fur her speedy recovery.
