Mud Editors Invited To Come and Notila Some Wonderful Growth Growth. The Portland Daily Telgram gave Vernonia editorial space last Satur day that was read all over the nation, more or les*. We would suggest to all the Portland paper* that were so good to us a year ago, that they send a representative here during this, our anniversary month, to note what a fast-growing city has accomplished in twelve months. They certainly would not recognize the town they visited a year ago. It is today Oregon’s fast est growing little city and will mean to Oregon one of her best industrial centers. Come over, editors, and visit us, and teli the state what they have here. The Telegram article was as follow*: “VERNONIA “Little more than a year ago Ver nonia, the forgotten village of the Ne halem valley, was rediscovered and dedicated anew as the industrial hub uf a richly endowed timber belt. It has been little more than a year, moreover, •Ince the first rails pushed through the virgin forest* into Ver nonia’s city limits; slightly less than that since the first train into this re born community carried hundred* of visitor* from Portland and adjacent point* to a great “open house” cele bration sponsored by Vernonia’s com mercial club. “Les* precocious, perhaps, than Washington’* infant city at the Cow litz and Columbia, but no less willing, Vernonia show* generous evidence of progress for the year. Accomplish ment* that may well surprise are re viewed by the Vernonia Eagle, ‘mouth piece of the Nehalem valley,’ in the issue celebrating its first birthday. Editor Paul Robinson, since the paper’s establishment a year ago, ha* not swerved from his purpose to at tract new industrial life to Vernonia, to build up it* pay roll and ’to adver tise all over Oregon and the Eastern state* the splendid opportunities of the Vernonia country.’ “The first year of growth after Ver nonia’s rebirth is sketched by the Eagle a* follows: ’We have told the world about Vernonia and believe we have been instrumental in getting hundreds of new families to live here. Twelve month* ago this paper adver tised, for several issues, for a laundry, and now we have one. We repeatedly asked for a bakery and we got one. We printed our need for a jeweler and were very successful. We asked for more hotels, rooms and boarding houses and still continue to get them. Many are the new industries we have seen locate in Vernonia and few are the failures. . . . Since the first issue of this paper the town ha* se cured water; it was a fight, but we won. We see a new telephone, a new railroad, many new business blocks and hundreds of new dwelling*. The splendid high school ha* been built since we were here and thousands of dollar* have been spent here by the largest lumber company in the coun try. ’’’Twelve months ago we had dreams of the largest mill in the Northwest locating in Vernonia. To day that dreartt is being fulfilled with Our Disgraceful Nain Street Can be Remedied Who will volunteer as a leader to see the property owners THIS WEEK? Why put it off another day. Here, readers, is an oppor tunity for public enterprise. Here is the proposition offered us. as told us by Supervisor A. D. Hall, lhe County will im mediately gravel or rock and roll thoroughly a strip 16 feet wide down Bridge street—only providing that the property ownera on this street chip in and hire a couple teams and men to level the sides and gravel to the 16 foot atrip, so that all can be rolled at once, All can chip in according to footage owned, rock can be had for the sides from the creek bed, thus making individual cost low. This must be started thia week. We underscand the County con templates paving the 16 ft. »trip next year, if we make it possible for them to rock and roll now, The sides must be plowed and dirt evenly.distributed—who will aet as leader now. For good ness sake, let’s go. It is at pre sent the worst strip of road in the country, We now have a splendid offer, and can accept it volunteeringly with no red tape. The way to do it is to do it.
