Urrn onia office at Vernonia, Oregon, nudar the Act of March 3, 1*79 Volume 1, Number 49 VERNONIA, OREGON, FRIDAY, JULY 13, 1923 COLUMBIA COUNTY MOUTHPIECE of the NEHALEM VALLEY Caution The Eagle dont want to insin uate that we are kicking, nor does it for a moment hint that anything iu "Being Pulled,” but we do think, for the well fare of all the citizens (and we lire For all our reader«) that our city council should go over the Recorders bcoks and find out what our water system is doing and what it is costing. There is supposed to be a Water Com mittee in the Council. Our water system is not entirely completed by any means. No one has water and we understand that as much money has been allowed now as the entire contract calls for. We were also under the impression that a certain kind of pipe was to be about $1200 less in price than the pipe first ordered. In vestigation wont hurt anyone. No insinuations that the cost is too high or that the work isnt entirely satisfactory, but the people of Vernonia want to know “where they are at” and what is being-done. On the Same Subject Necessity, Not Luxury Don’t refuse to marry a girl be cause she can’t cook. She may have money enough to pay your board. The Best is Preferable Greetings from Alaska Bridge street running through Vernonia certainly needs paving as bad as the road from Holton to St Helens, fact as bad as any road we have ever seen. The first of the week it was almost impossible to find, after the rain. This winter it cannot be used in the present condition. Vernonia has a trafic over this road, which is s county road, equalling any short stretch of road in Colum bia county. Vernonia has 1200 people now besides the transit who pass through, not to mention the heavy trucking. We wish the County court could have held a session in the middle of this street last Saturday. This time next year Vernonia will probably have five thousand people, a couple thousand voters from this ‘/Neck of the Woods,” and these individuals think they are as important as any living Last Sunday morning Arch elsewhere in Columbia county, it might be good policy to pay a bishop Christy came to Vernonh iittle attention to them before from Portland, on a special car they sink entirely in the mud. on the P. Ore¡$on Most of our citizens realize now that we have not been aim ing high enough. It cost money to do jobs twice. Best to spend more at first and do it right This applies to pavement, school houses, sidewalks, marshals, and ail city improvements. This is for the best interest of each and every citizen of Vernonia. We are going to advocate the best and most economical move ments for the majority, and we earnestly hope the majority, will see wherein we are right No reason why Vernonia cant be as uptodate as any little city in Oregon. We ate just i* im portant a d entitled to the best for our size. This is your paper for your interest. If you ever hs.ve any kicks or suggestions, send them in. Make this your forum. PAYIN6 OPPORTUNITY Right now, in Vernonia, the time is ripe for a large two or three story fii e proof hotel build ing. A hnildmg with three or ivur atare rouin > for rent on the ground floor and 50 to 75 hotel rooms up stairs. Som? one, or some company, will grab the chance. It is open. Sunday Ball Game Forest Grove came to Vernonia last Sunday to be defeated in a ball game that was rather one sided. Walt Coyle was in the box for Vernonia and was at h;s best. He struck out te” men and the visitors made five safe hits. The bases were all full several times, but the visitors could not score. Gene Roberts got “knocked out” whik running to third, but was able to finish the Kame. The F. G. boys got rattled, and made some hum ' plays, although their pitcher throws a good ball. The score was 17 to 0 in favor of Vernonia. Wiong Propaganda There was some talk of a “Neck tie Party” Monday night and certain people reported that the K. K. K. was behind it- On oath I can say that the K. K. K. had nothing to do with it, or even knew about the affair. The leaders of the bunch are men seen on our streets every day and none of them are mem bers of the K. K. K. or even had their applications in for membership. They were acting against the law, which the K- K. K. K. strongly condemn. The same men will perhaps need law protection themselves some day. —Exalted Cyclops.
