The mail-order catalog woos me in vain, for to pay-with out-seeing may bring me a pain. The home merchant credits ’till pay-day arrives,—he knows all the whims of his friends and their wives. His overall wear like the buckskin of old, —his buttons ain’t brass if he tells you they’re gold! Of every com munity he is a part, and even the kids know the path to his heart. He boosts for the chapel, the lodge and the school,—Com munity uplift” is ever his rule. And even the football and bask et ball teams, look kindly on him in their athletic dreams. I'd rather have him at my elbow each day, than to deal with a shark, many furlongs away. Let’s make the thing mutual, and stand by our friend,—there’s no place like home < for the money we spend,—Exchange. Tuesday evening two private cars side-tracked at Vernonia. Our Chamber of Commerce Com mittee intended to meet the party with autos to drive them around town, but unavoidable delays made this impossible, The editor had the pleasure of a thirty minute interview and a short walk with the officials. A. J. Davidson, General Man ager, is one of the most congen ial men to talk with you ever met; when he has time to talk and when the subject is to his liking. House flies, only h half-dozen were out; spring hats, a few, and more drunks than we have noticed in one day in a long time were staggering in the beautiful sun shine. A Sincere Warning Away back in boyhood days, we knew a boy who lost a leg by "jumping’^ trains. And still boys run after and ’’hop” trainr. It is against the law for boys to hang around the depot or tracks without business there; but they do it We watched four boys riding the train and jumping on and off, in Vernonia, Friday. At the last meeting of the Delphine Liteary society a motion was passt d provideding for pins and letters for the stu dents who served on the debate and basket ball teams. These sunny days the H. S. students are spending all of the time they can out doors. The boys are practicing ball and track work while the girls are patiently waiting for their volly ball and indoor baseball. Mr. Frank W. McAllister, General Counsel, Kansas City L fe Insurance Company, says: "The best evidence of that fact is that the Kansas City Life Insurance Company paid out during the past year practically One Million Dollars under polioy claims. There ware nearly five hundred of them in number, and to my knowledge the construction of the policy, as to what the language meant, was nev r ques tioned in a single instance. I under take to say that there is not another financial institution in the world that will handle business involving that sum of money, and ao many people, with such results." Party Is Well Recommended Where do you Hide Them? Paul Robinson, Editor and Owner The mass meeting for this Fri day night, called by the Cham ber of Commerce, is to further discuss the City Park and Auto Camp Ground subject. We need the park and suitable locations are scarce. If the park isn't in town it will be of no value to us whatever, as natural parks in the country are thick along the side of any road. We need a park in town, but whether the money would be available or not remains to be seen. L. J. Daugherty, President Ameri can Life Convention; See’y and Gen. Mgr. Guaranty Life Ina. Co., said: “Tou bave a company that you can well be proud of, I remember a young artiat who painted a picture so well that after finishing his work be stood back a few steps and looking at it said. "Now speak." You have painted a company ao well that you can say, "Now apeak,” and in words and ac complishments the old Kansas City Life does speak. It speaks louder then anything I could pneeibly say." reference to that, has made the phe nomenal growth in twenty-five years of its existence that has been made by the Ksnsas City Life Icsurance Com pany. An impression seems to pre vail among the uninformed, that life insurance companies resort to techni cal defenses to avoid payments upon ther policies. This, is grossly untrue and unfair. No legal reserve life in surance company in America ever hides behind a technicality In contest ing a claim. Furthermore, thousands of claims have been paid by the com panies which were of doubtful validity, because the usage of every company is to resolve the doubt in favor of the beneficiary. It should bo known, too, that every life insurance company, stock, mutual or mixed, io a policy bolder»’ company. The premium paid in by the policy holders and ac cruing gains thereof, am the capital upon which the company dooe business. The capital stock and surplus are a guaranty fund. The officers and direc tors am merely the trustees of the policy holders. The interests of the policy holdem am necessarily para mount. It is therefore the duty of the officers to refuse payment of pal pably fradulent claims, because of thia trustees.” Mr. Hoffman of the Hoffman Hardware Co., has added a paint department to bis store that he is advertising. He has a paint for rough bo rds. i as well as for smooth suifac ¡eÁnd inside work. He is advocating a good paint selling cneaper. It is the Acme brand, and he has a large stock for this the Paint Up Season. Another sad and neglectful fact was demonstrated Tuesday, when a dozen or more big otit from the Burlington, the G. N., the N. P„ the 8. P. & S. and the P. A. & P. railroad systems visited Vernonia. It is a fact that adjacent to Vernonia the* e is more good standing timber than there is around Longview, and it is a fact that we have a good fruit and dairy country and that we have the site for an in dustrial center. Now, it is also a fact that these big railroad systems are spending millions advertising this Northwest cou* - try and they want facts like w e could furnish them. The sad dest of facts is that the Chamber of Commerce didn’t have a cir cular or pamphlet on Vernonia?} of any description, to give thgmz* that they could get any c».p/ from or that they could look over Can you imagine and digest. such a condition of affairs in a fast growing, boom city with the advantages we could offer?
