The owners had not owned the mill long. They purchaed a nice bunch of cedar and were running steady, with night Bhift part of the time. In addition to the mill about 175,000 shingles were burned, and the top of Mr. Lane’s auto destroyed. This is c rtainly tough luck when shingles are so much in demand here. The com pany will rebuild. It appears that Mr. Todd had arranged with Mr. Hall for some wood and went after the wood, not know ing that Mr Covert had secured the lot. Mrs. Covert objected to Mr. Todd taking the wood and a heated argument ensued that ended in thre ts, blows and talk, resulting in the charge of assault and battery being served on Mr. Todd. The defendant paid the costs of the serving and the complaining witness with drew the complaint. The case was before Justice Weed. “Dad, Here’s In You” Local Parties in Court We happened in a bouse the other night, and over the parlor Professor Wilson then swore door was the legend worked in out a warrant for H. Suggestions for Improving Mail Delivery Service The prompt delivery of the letters you write depends upon your supplying a complete and corn ct address. Most letters are of sufficient importance to justify this eflfort. Most of the trouble in the Iccal post office is caused by mail addressed to “Portland, Oregon’’ or “City,” without str et and number, and that addressed to office buildings, without room num bers. If possible, mail should be addressed to street and number; if these are not known and it is addressed to a street corner, it should have the proper prefix, S. W. or N. E., etc. In view of the benefits to be gained may I not request that your envelopes, letter heads and statements bear, conspicuously, your full street or offic .• building address, as a convenience to those who wish prompt delivery of their letters to you? Your co-operation in the interest of an improved mail service will be much appreciated. All envelopes should have your return address printed on them. POSTMASTER P. Hill has a real chicken ranch out joining the Wm. Prin gle ranch. No one is better qualified to have a real chicken ranch than Mr. Hill. He under stands the business thoroughly. He is interested in White Leg horns and Plymoth Rocks. A 500 egg incubator arrived last week for him, making four of the ma chines he is now operating. He will soon nave baby chicks for everybody. H. W. Smith was in the picnic and fishing party last Sunday. They started home on the rail road track, Smith taking steps long enough to leave the rest far behind. Excitement was high when the party noticed a train speeding down the track behind them. Coyle, Detrow and most of the crowd scattered for the brush, but Smith started down the track in front of the train. He said if he couldn’t out-run it on a level track he was sure he couldn’t in the brush. He beat the train into Vernonia by sever al moments and rested at the depot for the arrival of the train and crowd. Wm. McPherson is anotehr newcomer this week who likes Vernonia well enough to stay. Our ‘Want ad’ column gets results Chicken Ranch Moving Ahead Necessary Master Ellison were in Vernonia Saturday. They were on an in spection trip ana visiti g our growing community. We are very sorry that we were absent when they called , t the office. " The road and bridge situation attracted their attention, as well as the crushed rock question. It is the plan to make Vernonia the center or distributing point for the crushed rock for this end of the county. There is an item of immense importance we would like if they had noticed, and that is the con dition of the county road at the west part of Vernonia, up the Corey hill. This road was cut down last fall to fill in Rose ave nue, and it is left in an impassa ble cond tion. Hundreds of peo ple live in the west side and those building new homes there are "up against it” to get to the business center. Wagon or auto cannot possibly make the hill in the wet. sticky clay, 1 nd many new homes want to build but cannot get the lumber up the hill. It is up to the county to finish the job and rock this hill for at least three or four blocks. It wont need it this summer, and next fall it will be too muddy to get the rock up the hill. Now is the time it should rocked. A warrant issued - by Mr. Van Blaricom charging Prof. Wils< n with assault and battery on Miss Myrtle VanBlaricom, an eighth grade pupil, resulted in a tnai before Recorder Owens Friday. The process of the trial grew monotonous, as witness after witness was called, until those in attendance feared the entire school and all grades might be called. Nearly three hundred spectators attended the hearing. Each witness testified to the ef fect that the Proffessor was jus tified in the punishment given the student. As soon as the last witness tad testified, the case was dis missed. The dignity of th** court was forgotten in several instances of prolonged laughter from the audience, which was probably justified from the pro gram. New City Marshal E. D.
