X ______ »■ Thousands of People to be Relieved of Oppression of Winter Mud The Roosevelt High way through the Nehal em Valley to Portland. Why Not? This is the most logical of all state highways. Trafic from the south over the Roose- velt Highway will goto Portland. They are headed to Portland. How will they get there? Tbe Columbia Highway from Astoria to Portland is congested with travel now. Why stop the Roosevelt Highway at Astoria? Run it on to the Metropolis, and run it through the scenic Nehalem Valley, which is by far the shortest route. Here the Tour ists will see a different scene, and one of what they are really asking about in Oregon. Here they will see where the wealth of Oregon comes from. The Roosevelt High way up the coast, throw the Coos Bay country, by Tillamook, Seaside and Astoria, then Astor ia now has five miles pavtd toward tbe Ne halem Valley. Go on with it through Vernon ia to Forest Grove and into Portland. The State Hotel Men are a unit in seeing the congested condition and and a new route solved. The continuation of the Roosevelt highway th rou Vernonia does it. This route releases many thousand farmers, townsmen and timber men out of the mud. It allows them to go to Portland or to the Sea All Year Round. The people in the three coun ties have been praying for it for years. Yes, the Portland-Astoria In land Highway can be made a part of the Roose velt, and make it unnec essary to start a new project. This project is certainly an old one. Water, Water Everywhere, Dut Last Minute Wireless Received By Eagle Not a Drop Fit to Drink Recent rains have raised creeks and rivers until the water reach ed the overflow stage. Wells in town are ¡over “running over.” The once pure cold water is mud dy and one can dip it out with a bucket from the top. When the water goes down the dirt will settie with the well. Next spring will probably be the time to guard against an epidemic- The expression that we have had wells and health tor forty years can’t be depended upon, as we have more people, more businest more refuge and more open toilets on the same level with the wells. The citizens voted by a handsome majority for a water system. The majority want it and need it immediately. It is time for actual construction and not debates and a renash of the same old questions and ar guments- Citizens, we don’t know the delay or the opinions of any individuals in staying off these important, necessary act ions. We know of no one here who can do the job better or cheaper, But we do know the p ople want it done now. We want a city of health, work and conveniences, and not a crowded grave yard this spring. The way it looks to the voter and citizen is that it is up to the city council. Let’s get the interest of Vernonia at heart and not the sole idoa of fighting any one. Let us get water and get it 18 soon as possibl?. As far as the Eagle is concerned personally, we would be glad to see the reins turned over entirely to any on i that thinks their argument has any foundation for results, if they can deliver the goods. If they can do the job. We don’t care who builds it, who bosses it; who oversees it, so we get it before it is everlastingly too late. We hear reports that the Council has voted the emer gency and the matter in a shape to bring actual construction at a near day. We hope so, There is hu*ry needed. if w TJ" .
