George Eliot’s religious belief was nev
er distinctly understood by the world at
large. In the following lines, which have
been pronounced as beautiful as any tobe
found in the English language, the fa
mous author has given an inkling of her
views.—
THE CHOIR INVISIBLE.

BY GEORGE EI IOT.
O may I join the choir invisible
Of these immortal dead who live again
In minds made better by their presence; live
Jn pulses stirred to generös,ty,
In deeds of daring rectitude, in scorn
For miserable aims that end with self,
In thoughts sublime that pierce the nignt like
stars,
And with their mild persistence urge man’s
search
To vaster issues.

This is the life Id come
Which martyred men have made me re glori

For us who strive to follow. May I reach
That purest heaven, be tootheriouls
The cup of strength in some great agony,
Enkindle generous ardor, feed pure love,
Beget the smiles that have no erueltv—

Whose music is the gladm as of the world.
