That is. the American people as a whole, inch and poor alike, are paying a bulk sum four or fives times a large as the Government, is receiving for the pur pose of meetincr our public obligations. The collection of income and excess profits taxes is an enbrmouslv cotlv thing. The machinery is vast and that the Government uses to determine ana ' housancis oi men aim women cumbersome collect those taxes are taken from productive employment to man this macninery. But when we contemplate a system of taxation that aims to raise a billion dollars for Government use, and which co its the people of this country five billions of dol lars before the Government uses it, it is time that we were raising an insistent and unanimous cry for something in the way of taxation more in keeping with the reasonable ness, fairness and justice. In the face of this cost of administration and collec tion of the income tax, it is now planned to put into effect in the State of Oregon an income tax, creating more of fices for the taxeaters and more for the producer to dig up.
