Agricultural College, Cor- iVallis, Ore, May Farmers and other I poultry raisers of Oregon who have Miffcrcd loss in young chick arc I asked lo co-operate with llic depart' mcnt of ilactcriology, Oregon Agri cultural College, in ascertaining the catuc and methods of control of the dinrasc. They can asuist themselves as well as confer a favor on the de partment by taking tlir chirk as -con as pOMihlc after death, one ittn it in a water-tight can, packing it ii ice , and sawtiuit in a small box, .it.tl ' sending it parcel post to the depart- nn nt of Ilactcriology, O. A. C. , Cor .allis, Oregon. Oregon is the second state in the Union to carry on this work anil G. D. Honor, who is con , ducting the experiments, has had the i benefit of three years experimental work in the firii state to undertake it. Connecticut, atStorrs Station. In inviting co-operation Mr. Horton says: "The uctin of the loss of young chickc at this season of the year is one of vital importance to poultrytncn It has been estimated that at least ten per cent of all the chicks that are lost die as a result of white diarrhoea, a condition brought about by a sprcific germ or organism called 'Itpitllorum.' The action of this or gani.m is as follows: the mature hen having acquired the germs transmits thrin through her eggs to the young chicks. That is, the g.rins aft'.r gain ing entrance into the hen body lodge themselves within some of the ova or undeveloped rggs and later, when these germ laden eggs are hatched the young chick emerging from them are infected before leaving the shell. These chicks may live for a period of weeks during which time they arc a source of 'danger to the healthier chicks because their drop inijigsnUiin dcadlyjgcrms which the hcflltiiicr chicks 'may pick up. Complete isolation of the infected chicks and the free use of sour milk a ill lessen, in a large measure, the mortality. "In order to determine accurately whether or not the loss of the chicks is due to the presence of the while diarrhoea germs and thereby gain some idea as to the condition of the health of the present slock, the Bac teriological department will make an ova-niiiation, free, of the dead chicks provided the chicks arc sent direct to the department of JJastcriology just as soon as they die. Our aim is to :wntrol and cventualy wipe out thi oniucessary 'evil' in this state. Co operation upon the part of the poul tiy raisers is not only desired but necessary for the success of this un dertaking. Further information may be obtained by addressing the depart ment of Bacteriology, Oregon Agri cultural College, Corvallis, Oregon." HINER & REED AtHlner-s Machine bhop No Jobs too Big and None too Small WHAT'S THE USE Of running foolish risks with your money? Why be like that London man who lost $100 while FEEDING THE ELEPHANT? The money waa in an envelope in the side pocket of his coat. Thoughtless of results he put biscuit in his pockets for tho elephant to delicately extract with his trunk. When the huge beast reached this side pocket he neatly and expeditiously "ap propriated both biscuit nod money, seemingly relishing hisj $100 MEAL. It is a safe wager that the Tnan'is now a convert to the check ing system.
