A rlairy cow or a steer is the machine that converts feed into milk or beef, hence feed has the same re lation to the dairyman and stock raiser as raw material has to the manufac turer, and the amount of proflti de pends largely on the quality and cost of the raw materials used. In conclusion allow rne to give n summnryof the silo and the reasons why. A good silo will make you more mon uy than anything you can place on your fnrrn. An improperly constructed siio is a expenditure of money because It will have to bu rebuilt every few years, thus costing more money than a good one would. Hesides it will not! make ensilage and sooner or later will bo the means of losing five or six hun dred dollars worth of feed. Silos should be built of clear lumber because, rough knotty lumber will warp and crack. A silo should have a dour front rein forced with iron, because the doors COUNCIL MEETS. The writer has no desiro to onter into detnih as to why tiio farmers should erect silos, us that fluid has been cover od by it great number of able men. However, allow me to call mitention j to n few evident fncti that have come , under my personal observation. Twenty years ago the farms in the i Willamette Valley produced ISO to U.' bushels of wheat to the aero: today Die same farms produce IT. to 20. Thus 'it is very evident th.it if the old meth od of farming is continue.), this land will not be worth fi.rming within n very tow years, and no doubt the only thing to bring tho land back to its old productironoss is the growing of stock. One can travel the length of tho Will nine tie Vnlloy and the only cattle to bo seen are a very few dairy herds, j A few years ago whun land values i went up ho that it became unprofitable to use the land for grazing purposes, ! the farmers discontinued the growing i of tieof behoving that without a large amount of grazing bind they could not will riot rernaTnTnlaeeitrio'utt' A silo should have hinge doors ami fasteners, because it is necessary to draw the doors up light at all four cor ners in order to hold them in their seat nnd also brace the silo. A silo should have n circular roof, because this will hold the top of the silo round and prevent air spaces from forming around the wall. A silo should have a flexible roof, because unless it has, it is impossible to draw the staves together ut the top when they shrink. A silo requires pearly one ton of iron and steel in its construction, because wood shrinks, swells and warp-t, and this amount of iron and steel is necessary to adjust and hold the wood in place. Clover grows luxuriantly in Tilla mook County and maues good silage when properly cut arid stored in silo. The County Agriculturist, It. C. Jones will have an otfice in the court hujse, and anyone wishing to see or consult him will find him at his otlice on Saturday or Monday, or can get in touch with him over the Mutual phone. He wants the farmers to bring in their agricultural problems. Mr. Jones is getting around among our farmers as much as, possible and has made one trip to Cloverdale. He says that there are two things which he has found we are greatly in need of, viz: better bulls and more attention to suppliinentary feedjng.
