offering to increase by ten per cent the
pay of every employe who totally ab
stains from intovieatim; liquors. Thus
we have another argument acamst the
whisky business, which should be far
reaching. The above argument will
appeal to that clas uho arc prone to
measure things by dollars and cents.
When an employer offers n man a ten
percent increase in his wages if he j
will not use intoxicating liquors, itj
means that actual facts ami conclusive i
data have been considered and are
back of the decision. The above is one
of the Tempera ce arguments in which
money talks, and as this is an age of I
commercialism the financial phase of.

The offer of an increase of ten per
cent in wage ought to awaken many a
man to the fact that f total abstinence
is wrth that much to an employtr
from eight to ten hours of the day, it
ought to be worth juist ns much to the
employe during the hours in which he
is not working, by enabling him to put
his spare time to better advantage and
get more satisfactory enjoyment out
of life in a general way.

considering the matter from a personal
standpoint we would like to see some
good Democrat land the job. Mow
ever, if we are to have a Republican
governor our preference is Dr. James
Withycombe, who for the past twenty
years ha been director of the Oregon
Agricultural College. In our opinion
thre is not another man in Oregon
who is as well equipped to look after
the agricultural interests of Oregon as
is Dr. Withycombe. His twenty years
of experience at the Oregon Agricul
tural College has given him a wonder
ful insight into the agricultural needs
of Oregon. Dr. Withycombe is not
only a man of considerable ability, but
he is a man who stands for better
things all along the line. If we are to
have a Republican Governor let it be
