Hill is now assured, and in consequence
the whole northwest is connratulatini;
Senator Chamberlain for his untiring
efforts in Retting this bill through con
gress. The construction of this railroad
which will cost thirty-rive million or
more will be of vast importance to
Oregon and Washington as it will open
up vast coal fields which will supply
our manufacturing centers with cheap
er fuel, and will open up a large area
of undeveloped county which will no
doubt prove a splendid market for
many of our products.
Senator Chamberlain has been doing
some good work in the senate and his
Eervices should be appreciated. He
has been severely criticised by the
stand pat press for hU action in voting
with the administration for the lower
ing of the tariff on some of Oregon's
products, but that criticism is growing
less in view of the fact that the wel
fare of our industries have not been
affected in the least by the reduction
in the tariff. Wool is higher than it
ever was; dairy products are demand
ing top notch prices, and the lumber
market is firm.
In considering the revision of the
tariff the administration had to con
sider the needs of the nation from a
nation wide and world wide standpoint.
As civilization advances the need3 of
the world as a whole are becoming
greater and this must needs have an
influence on our affairs. When we
look into the matter ve discover that
prices in all parts of the world are on
the upgrade and there is a demand for
the first class Etaple articlei every
where. For this reason the expected
invasion of foreign made goods has not
taken place. The new tariff simply
places our manufacturers in a position
wher? they must meet the competition
of the world and in consequence, in
many instances, make a better article.
In other words give the people more j
for their money.

petition we will of necessity open up
new markets for our goods.
The administration has been criticised
because of the fact that tariff revision
has been done for the be .e!it of the
east at the expense of the west.
This criticism seems inconsistent
to us. A prosperous east means
plenty of money for western develop
ments, and we are receiving benefits
from this gource at the present time.
Our nation is a largo one, and in mak
ing a tariff law much has to be taken
into consideration. Conditions aro ad
justing themselves fast to the new
tariff law which is proving itself to
be whht the administration wants it
to be: A help not a hinderance to
trade. Senator Chamberlain did well
to stand by the administration in thiH
matter.

cial purposes is urged by no less un
authority than Dr. Clifton F. Hodge,
professor of civic biology at tho Uni
versity of Oregon and a biologist of
even more than national repute.
The mussel ii tattful. eaiy to pro
cure, cheap and nutritious," suys Dr.
Hodge. "It is better than a clam and
is as good as the oyster. There is no
reason why it should be neglected.
Mussel taising should be an Oregon
industry."
The mu.Kcl exists along tho Oregon
coast but to what extent Dr. Hodge,
who came to the stale university only
last October, has not yet had time to
investigate. He has picked up speci
mens on the beach at Bnndun and be
lieves this sea food is probably to
be found in all the Oregon coast
counties Clatsop. Tillamook, Lincoln,
Lane, Coos anil Curry and Doughs.
The mussel i,oes not frighten Euro
pean Mediterranean regions. Boys
in Naples bay dive and bring up speci-
a thumb, which
they market. The French liavu had a
method of cultivating mussels that
dates back to 1035. It is estimated that
$1,000,000 worth ot mussels are used
for food annually in Paris alone.
Mussels grow in great beds, where
they have been introduced or are in
digenous.
Thcso beiis are often acres In extent,
on the surface of mud or sand, extend
ing out from between tide marks to
several fathoms of water. At Narra
gansett alone on the Atlantic coast,
there are 1100 acres of gen musiel
beds. From 0000 to W)0O bushels of
this sea food grow on a single acre,
and in Massachusetts 25 cents will sup
ply enough for ten persons for one
meal.
Fear that muMsels were poisonous
has kept many people from them. Early
settlers in America found the Indians
superstitiously avoiding them, and the
prejudice has continued since by Ore
gonians who can locnto a mess; Mash
the mussels thoroughly ; put in a her
meticully covered kettle with a little
pepper ; cook ten minutes, drain tho
liquor and make a rnnriniere inuce, as
follows: Chop an onion very line, fry
il i a goiuen nrown in a- little butter,
nun a nit!.; Hour and add tho broth
noil a few minutes. Add a little
cnoppen parsley and pour on the rnus
sels, previously laid 011 a platter after
top siieii has been removed.

The Distance Between
WHEELER
And
ehalem City
Is less than 2 miles. Between these two
towns there is more traffic than hetween
any other two towns in the county lo
cated hut that distance apart.
Yet to drive a team from W heeler
to Nehalcm you would have to drive
over 10 miles around through the valley.
A uagou road between the towns of
Wheeler and Nehalem should be built
at once and thus eliminate the waste of
time and money occasioned by forcing
traffic over a 10 mile haul instead of
over a two mile haul.
We believe work should be started
on this project at once.
