From Literary Digest: Most jM.-raomi would sny, offhand, that whatever else alcohol may lw, It Is certainly a stimulant, and that the trouble with It I that It -stimulate loo much. On the contrary, Dr. Emll Kraeimlln, professor of mental diseas es In the University of Munich. Is said to hjrv demonstrated that alcohol Is n narcotic first, Inst, and always; that the'stlmiilatlon is merely Imaginary; and that one docs lest, nnd poorer work under Its Influence, altho. curiously enough, ho thinks he is turning out more and bettor work than usual. We wish to correct a statement which sort'that It Is not the fourth or fifth j was made last week, as we were somc driijk that Intoxicates : It Is the sum of j what mis-informed In regard to the the firs', second, and third. On direct cvidencu and supporting testimony they have made out a strong case against alcohol. A man Is "drunk" or under the influence of liquor to a de monstrable degree, says Dr. Kraeplln, when his muscular or mental speed or endurance limits have suffered a dim inution as a result of his having Imbib ed. This condition may be clearly shown by mechanical devices of the labrntory, whose testimony is final, no matter what the man liitinelf has to say about it. There is no appeal from their derisions. Some of Dr. Kraepc lln'l test are thus described In The Associated Sunday Mxgnzincs by Dr. Edwin F. Bowers. He writes: "A group of men who wcro kept in Ignorance of tho real nature of the tests, -who understood only that they were expected to persist to ttie limits of their endurance -was capable of a definite averngc quantity of work. This average was determined with al most mathematical certainty by ex periments mude dozens of limes, under absolutely similar conditions as regard ed time of day, food, exercise, nd surroundings. "tX good index of the degree of a maifa" capability for work Is tffd weight he can continue to lift with the index-finger of his right hand. So the ergograph, a celebrated labrotory de vice invented by Prof. Angelo Mosso, was brought into requisition. In man ipulating tills the fingers were clinched round n wooden peg all but the index finger - the arm held immovable by be ing clamped to the arm of a chair. A weight of several kilograms, suspended by a sniBlI rope that parsed over a pul ley, wns raised nnd lowered until tho subjects were forced to desiit from ex haustion. This process was repeated twelve times, with rests of a minute intervening like the rounds in n box l.ig contest. Each pull was automatic ally recorded by n pencil on n strip of paer, registered by a line. The sum of the lengths of all the lines was translated into meter-kilogram'., 'which meant the work accomplished in rais ing onejcilogram one meter against the pull of gravity. "These experiments were made ten times a day, and the total average for each mnu each calculated for a number of days, under conditions of absolute abstention from drink. Then the men were given thu ulcoholic equivalent of n giHd glass' of Bordeaux wine utter each meal, and the experiments repeat ed. The consequences wero n diminu tion in the subjects' ability to with stand thu fatigue of weight-lifting, amounting to nn average of from 7 C-10 to 8 per cent These experiments were repeated hundreds of times by scien tists in various parts of Europe, and always with similiar results. In every instance it definite, mensurable loss in muscular ettleiency was demonstrated. "Having shown these effects on re sistance to fatigue, thu learned profes sors advanced to thu consideration of principles involving combined muscu lar and mental processes. The 'writing balanci' invented by Professor Krao peliu, was subpenaed us chief witness In this case. Tills ingenious contrivanco had attached to it fifth second chron ometer, which automatically registered (Continued on page 2) Seniors 3 Junior 5 UErttshojan. 4 showing made by the Domestic Science students nt the Parent-Teacher meet ing. It seems that not all the biscuits were bad as we reported, for some of the visitors pronounced some of them very good indeed (or maybe better). No Injustice was meant and we hope no ofTensu has been taken, and if It has we sincerely wish it taken away altogether, no difference where. Still another mistake, that did as great an injustice (almojl) as the ' above mentioned one. though it was entirely unintentional was concerning the Junior Class officers. Frank Eb beson was elected to the office of Ser-' geant at Arm instead of Lalen Mad-, dux. I The Camera Club took its first hike last week. A few pictures were taken and good time reported. The members were all more or le.s tired, probably more, when they reached home and some before they reached home for the hike was quite long for the first one. The class teams' percentage is as follows in Basket Ball. Played Won 3 o Lost 0 3 . 3 Per cent 1,000 .400 1 , 3 .250 The Basket Bnll games played last Friday were won by the Outlaws over the Seniors and the Juniors over the Freshmen.
