The secret oligar chy of bankers that has ruled the bank ing nnd credit of this country for a generation is in full flight. Nothing more prophetic of coming events or more confirmatory of past facia has happened in a decade than was the resignation of J. 1 Mirgan II and members of his firm frtvn director ships in outside corporations. Thus there are 13 great r.iilr.ads from which ysung Morgan resigned. They are: New York Central, West Short, Lake Shore & Michigan sjuthern, , Michigan Central, New Yorx, Chicago , and St. Louis; Cleveland, t inoinmti, ' Chicago and St. Louis: New York. New J Haven & Hartford ; Central New E'lg-1 land , New York. Westchester & Bos-, ton; Harlem River & Port Chester; Rutland; Hartford Jt Connecticut Western; New York, Ontario & West ern, i In addition, Mr. Morgan resigned . from the New England Navigation Co., ' .New England Steamship Co., and the Rhode Island (.'. He also resigned from the Western Union Telegraph Co. Nearly all of tnese are giant transpor tation lines. Being a director in luose lines meant that .Mr. Morgan was their banker meant that Mr. Morgan wis int. nominating influence in their manage ment. The resignation themselves are tremendously significant. Even more significant is a statement by Mr. Mor gan relative to the resignation in which he says there is "an apparent chanue of public sentiment in regard to direc torships." The resignations are the first out-' ward sign of the collapse of the secret j are going to be un-Morgnnited. Trans portatior is to be set free. Credit is emancipated. Never before in the history of the country was there so many sign that Big Business realizes that there is a new order at the national capital an order which plays no favorites and grants no special license to captains of industry to govern the government. -Journal. But these are only the directorships! from which Mr. Morgan has retired: He is still a director in these: United States Steel Corporations, Northern Pacific Railway, Internation al Mercantile Marine company. How could there be a more perfect arrangement for one mn i's dominant influence in the wide field of banking, transpjitation and industry? How could there be- a more perfect system for interfering with the natural course of markets and for distribution? Controlling all tt.ese huge resource, how could there be a more effective contrivance for exercising a personal, one-man dominion over trace, transpor tation, banking, insurance, industry, and, more important than all, for con trol of the country's credit, declaring what enterprise s should be underwrit ten and what should not, determining where a railroad suould bo built or not be built, directing what steamship line or wh t grt-at proposed industry should be financed and what not? What arrangements could be more perfect for encouraging new enter prises or for blasting them, for making confidence or destroying it, and by vi cious ussaults upon credit for creating a panic among the people? Doubtless the Jnow currency bill with the transfer of credit from Wall Etreet control to public control had much to do with the resignations. Doubtless a further factor was Wood row Wilson's proposed legislation pro hibiting interlocking directorates. But Mr. Morgan is resigning. His business partners aro resigning. Geo. V.
