This mean. a revenue of probablv $30,000,000 a year, with a possibility of much creator return in tho near future. The railroads, how. ever, set up a leud wail that this u all at their expense--that they have been compelled n carry the added parcel post mail with practically no extra pay. It is declared, however, by the Nev York Time, "from a reliable quarter," that even assuming that the contention of the railroads is correct there still woul i be a good margin of profit at the end of the calender year 1913 after the payment of extra re muneration to the roads. SAUCE FOR GOOSE AS WELL AS THE GANDER' From Telegram: Twice within the space of b fw , w;eks have the people of Salem deelar-1 ed bv substantial majorities that they I do not want the saloon. The second declaration was more emphatic than the first, although concerning the first there was no room for doubt. This twice affirmed verdict commands no respect from the liquor interests. They have sought to invalidate one verdict and they will lake the same course re garding the other. In both cases they rely upon legal technicality; in neither case do they give the snap of the fin gers for the recorded will of the jeo ple, or the right of the people to have that will observed. If there is any class of men on earth i more fond o: prating aDoui personal liberty, popular rights, and all that sort of thing, than the. liquor interest, ! that class has not yet been discovered. In profession of democracy they are hard to beat. But under stress it is disclosed that the Kind of democracy which they regard as the genuine ar ticle, is that which will support the liquor business. Democracy that will mnifcst itself otherwise is spurious. The true explanation of the liquor men's attitude is that they want to sell booze and make easy money re gardless of consequences. If they can gratify that desire despite the opposing will of every decent man and woman in the community well and good. Tne i fact the business is an economic waste! and a moral scourge cuts no ice with them. In part at least this un-American, ,,nta..ar.tn, ...wl l.ft'.int '.iMiti.rl. r.f th..
