[1CH PHELPS STANDS CON
NED WOULD IT NOT SEEM
SURD TO FOLLOW HIS VAG-
[ES STILL FURTHER? He clam-,
lsly insists upon learning where in
Bible “we find proof that . . . fish
lot meat.” For his information, I
ild say that no such text is in ex-
nce. Few I imagine will deny that
is not meat. If Phelps does, I
let him have his own way in this
ance. Catholics abstain from flesh
it on Friday to honor the death of
Mt. As for the perpetual virgin-
of the Virgin Mary that she had
other children after her Divine
i, this is a matter of history rath-
than of sci ipture. The Bible it-
’ expressly states that only a part
even the things which Jesus said,
or taught are recorded in the sa-
1 book The early church held
it firmly to this belief, as we learn
n the condemnation of Helvidius
inian, and other heretics of the
rth century by the synods of Rome
D. 381) and Capua (A. D. 392).
Council of Lateran in A. D. 649
Uy sanctioned this doctrine by an
ial decree. Indeed, Luther, Calvin,
ngli, and Beza among the Reform-
besides many Protestant writers
ly, deny as emphatically as any
holic that the Blessed Virgin had
other children than Christ. To
irmine, therefore, the meaning of
word brother or brethren in the
pel texts, we take its meaning in
Hebrew and according to tho in-
irctation handed down by St.
ima and St. Augustine and the
r distinguished authorities; which
tat the father of James was Al

his brothers, Jude, Joseph and

® the start, that Phelps is deliber-
prevaricating when he caims

1 erds. Now Phelps comes back
1t*1'8 illuminating statement:
®rs will notice that Mr. Davey
“J over the fence. First I was a
1 '»r, and did not have it. Now, I
'e it. but it is perjury. It is
now up to my opponents to prove that
it is perjury.” How in the world
can I or anyone else prove that his
document is perjury unless he offers
it as evidence. But I do not think he
can do even this; I still believe Phelps
statement is only a plain, simple lie.
Certainly it is one or the other.
WOULD SANE PEOPLE THINK
IT POSSIBLE FOR ANYONE TO
GIVE UTTERANCE TO SUCH IN
SANE PRATTLE AS THIS: “If
Rome did not fear England and Am
erica she would slaughter the Protes
tants in Ireland, Belgium and France
tomorrow." This was the climax of
another of his “unanswerable argu
ments” about the intolerance of the
Catholic church. Whether such idiotic
ramblings as this justify further com
ments, I leave to the kind reader of
the Headlight to judge.
MUST NOT THE PEOPLE OF
TILLAMOOK STAND AMAZED AT
THE BLATANT AUDACITY OF
THIS PREACHER EXHIBITED IN
HIS 37 LINES OF RAVINGS ABOUT
SLAUGHTER, INQUISITIONS, etc?
In mentioning Llorent, I was speaking
about the Spanish Inquisition, saying
“I charitably presume that you are
ignorant of the fact that these anti
Catholic statistics” on the Spanish In
quisition, to which very likely you
chiefly refer, are originally derived
from an apostate named Llorent who
admits that he burned all the records
from which he claims to have taken
Mr. Phelps
all his figures. However,
II-------- , —
'
pretends that I said that all the
records of all the strifes between
Catholic and Protestants were de
stroyed by Llorent. He becomes fair
ly frantic indulging in this character
istic statement: “This is a fair sample
of the fables, fairytales and tarra-
diddle, that Roman Catholic priests
and leaders try and cram down their
laymen as history.” On this subject
of the persecutions of the Middle
Ages, the following is again respect
fully referred to the intelligent people
of Tillamook. We do not deny that
some Catholics, laymen and ecclesias
tics, persecuted their opponents dur
ing the middle ages, when even Cath
olic rulers regarded heresy as a polit
ical crime, destructive of authority,
government and right order. There
fore while we denounce those mon
archs who used torture and inquisi
tions, we should remember that their
aim usually was to stamp out civil
wars and internal dissensions, with
in their own realms. Those were ages
of severity and cruelty. Thank God,
as far as Catholics are concerned,
they have passed away forever. But
is it fair to speak continually of the
Huguenots, or the Spanish Inquisi
tion, the abuses of which have been
grossly exaggerated, ignoring Lie
fact that Protestantism itself was
propagated with a world-wide storm
cf persecution? In every country
where the reformers became power
ful, they persecuted most bitterly;
e. g., in Germany England, Scotland,
Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands;
Luther himself held that the Ana
baptists should be burned; declared
all measures against Catholics law
ful »nd invoked the civil power
against Carlstadt and the Z v’-’-g i-n-
Calvin burned Servetus far
the Trinity and wrote a bo»k ’fl de
