Frank Davey.
(By Frank Davey)
(Continued from last week)
There is no other Profession for
Lhich’such long and careful prepar-
is required as the Catholic
Eesthood. And after ordination, the
K.,r«h imposes many obligations on
F clergy because of the nature of
Keir work for which piety, purity and
Klf denial are essential. Of course
1 me priests are mose spiritual than
Ethers but besides private devotions,
In priests must devote nearly three
Kours each day to religious exercises.
E, is not commonly known to non-
E tholics. Priests say Mass on week
Lavs the same as on Sundays, and
IL spend some time in prayer both
■before and after Mass. Then, they
■must daily recite the Divine Office
Iwhich is a collection of prayers and
Lripture-reading, which consumes
■from an hour to an hour and half each
Iday.
I The scoffer to whom prayer and
■ folly are analogous may pass this
lover with contempt but the man or
Iwoman in whom reverence for sacred
■things still lives, will gladly acquiesce
|in this—that God gives grace and
Ltrength to those who seek it from
I him. We do not mean to say that no
|priest was ever untrue to his vows.
Il’herc are grave defects here as in
lall things human. As there have been
■ fallen angels, fallen apostles, fallen
■ preachers and fallen ministers so
[also ¡3 there the occasional unworthy
[priest. The few guilty ones, are they
| who cause the occasional press scan-
[dal. or after being caat out of the
[ranks of the clergy write such books
|as “Thirty Years in Hell” or lecture
| on “priests and nuns” for a living.
| WHAT DO THOSE WHO ARE
[NOT BLINDED BY FANATICISM
[THINK OF PHELP’S WAY OF
[SLANDERING THE POPES? Phelps,
[supposed list of 37 Popes to whom all
[sorts of evils are charged is typical
I of all his statements. As the Catholic
(church always has had haters and
[persecutors, so the Popes have always
had their traducers. Many of the
Popes were martyrs, as the history of
(early ages indicates. Even more of
them were saints, as their extraord
inary sanctity and work for humanity
(attest. Two, three or at most a half
I dozen of the entire 262 were sinners.
But taken as a whole, their names
constitute a roll of honor unrivalled
and unequalled in the history of the
world. To justly appreciate their
work for mankind, something more
than the perusal of a few sordid, anti-
Catholic books or papers is required.
| A painstaking study of the truthful
history of each, and the age and cir
cumstances in which each lived is
necessary.
WHAT MUST THE THINKING
READER CONCLUDE REGARDING
SUCH METHODS AS THESE: In
a former communication Phelps hao
said “Was it not McKinley the iron
willed President who handed the Sen
ate a report of the machination of
the Roman Catholic church in the
Phillipines.” As I then stated, no
body before had ever called the mild,
gentle McKinley an “iron willed” man
or president. Instead of striking a
mailed fist at the Catholic church
this document rings with most un
qualified praise of the church and her
institutions. O, but there are some
“quotations” in that document. Yes,
the characteristic Phelps-like kind,
the extreme viciousness of which be
trays their own falsity and the ani
mosity that is back of them.
As
Christ himself had haters and tra
ducers among his own people, the
Jews, so the Catholic church has al
ways had this type of men who have
personal ends to gain or private
malice to exercise.
Now however,
Phelps comes out with thia statement:
We refer Mr. Davey to document
being good? His statement that these
men were bitter anti-Catholics is not
true." Kind reader, here is another
sample of anti-Catholic dishonesty;
judge for yours« Ives.
WHAT DO HONEST READERS
THINK OF THIS TYPICAL ANTI-
< ATHOLIC DEVICE? Phelps attri
butes this wild insane statement to
Cardinal Martinelli: “The laity have
no right to interfere with the clergy;
if the laity understand that they have
any rights, they will do in America
as they once did in France . . . they
will kill the clergy.’ ’ But he is care
ful to prefix his statement with the
words that “the Cardinal is reported
to have said.” Then after h¡3 sup
posed quotation, he adds this other
“convincing argument:” “I would sug
gest that since these words are from
a living author and amount to slander
of a whole group that he make good
his boast before the laymen.” But
since Cardinal Martinelli himself is
dead, therefore his supposed words
“reported” to have been said, can
hardly be made the basis of court
action. Phelp’s high sounding talk
is therefore nothing more than an
other monumental example of his in-
sincerity and audacity.
• •
WHAT MUST BE THOUGHT OF
SUCH DISHONEST METHODS AS
THIS: “Miss Schoffen says in print
over her name that Father Cesserri”
etc. adding “this is slander.” Yes,
Mr. P. is right for once; judging by
the statement of those who knew the
venerable old priest named above,
this is another case of pernicious,
diabolical slander. But kind reader,
Phelps wants to know why nothing is
done to rosecute those guilty of above
slander. For the simple reason that
the good old priest died long years
ago and therefore cannot very well
cortte into an earthly court to vindi
cate himself. But rest assured that
there is a higher court, where those
whom Phelps and his coadjutors so
unjustly and cruelly malign will be
able to present their cause before the
Just Judge. In this connection per
mit me to show the difference of
method, between the above and that
which Catholics employ. The open
ing lines of a four page pamphlet en
tiled “The Truth About Nuns and Ex
Nuns" published by the Catholic
Truth Society , 304 McKay Bldg.,
Portland, are as follows: “The gold-
brick salesman and confidence man is
still at work verifying what a famous
character of the last century once
said — that the American people like
to be humbugged. At this time these
play the role of the Anti-Catholic
lecturer who tours the country, engag
ed in coining anti-Catholic prejudice
and bigotry into gold and silver for
their pockets. Theirs is a campaign
for revenue only. With them the end
always justifies the means.
Their
appeal is made in the name of patriot
ism and religion, but in reality they
are peddlers of lies, disseminators of
filth, broadcasters of hate and enmity.
But what of this? The end is always
good in their eyes, i. e. the coins they
extract from their dupes by the sale
of books and “free will” offerings;
though the means they adopt are
saturated with iniquity. Lest we
seem like our defamers—to avoid
legal resonsibility by dealing in gen
eralities, we name specific characters
of the above type; Ex-Sister Lucretia,
Ex-Sister Ethel “Mary Angel”, Doro
thy Nichols, etc.” Between 25 to 50
thousand of these leaflets have been
distributed but still no court action.
A similar pamphlet signed by J. R.
Murphy, Northwestern Bank Bldg.,
Portland, was also widely distributed
sometime ago. In all these there is
no evasion, neither does it say “it is
reported.” Everything is direct and
in writing. For the information of
the editor of the Headlight, we are
sending sample copy of each pamphlet
upon which the seal of the Catholic
Truth society has been placed to show
just who is distributin gthem. Com
pare these methods with those of
Phelps.
