school house that formerly stood on
the place now owned by Dolph Tin-

“The first school house built in
Tillamook was constructed when my
father, W. D. Stillwell, was a director.
The Skaggs grocery store now oc
cupies the front part of that old
school house, which is just opposite

“The Indians were skillful canoe
ists, and had among them some ex
pert coastwise sailors. One whom I
recall, was an Indian named Tom
Tillotson. How he got his English
name, I do not know, but he was
“some navigator,” although he didn’t
know anything about scientific navi
gation. He once took a Tillamook
built schooner from this bay to Port
land, and had no difficulty in making
the round trip. Tom married one of
Chief Kilches’s daughters, whose name
was Anna. The whites all called him
“Capt.” Tillotson, a name to which
he was justly entitled. Another Til
lamook Indian was Jo, who also was
quite a sailor. He married Betsy,
another daughter of Kilches. Jo was
taking out a Tillamook-made schoon
er on its trial trip to Astoria, and
when off Clatsop beach, a storm came
up, and the crew lost control of the
schooner, with the result that the
craft piled up on the beach, drowning
Capt. Jo in the surf, and leaving an
Indian princess to mourn his loss.
The schooner thus lost, belonged to a
man named Terwilliger, who was a
relative of the pioneer family of that
name, in early Portland.”
“I’ll give you some more pioneer
stuff, later on,” sand Mr. Stillwell,
“that is if you want it?”
The Pioneer column man said “he
wanted it.”
