ordinance, was again tabled until the,
next meeting. One of the owners off
the stage line was in the city and made ,
a statement that his line had again,
put on a night schedule by which a j
stage left Portland for this city at,
midnight, and that it could bring first
class mail to this city by 5 a. m. each'
morning. He stated that the rilla-
mook mail is made up at 11 o’clock p. j
m. each night at the Portland post )
office, and could be brought here at
the early hour above mentioned, while
by the present method of transporta
tion, it is delivered in this city at
5 p. m. This stage now carries the
Oregonian to this city.
A committee'of women from the Til
lamook Women’s club was present,
and asked for permission to beautify
the triangular tract on Third street
and Sixth avenue, east, by the plant-
ing of flowers, etc., thus adding to
the attractiveness of the city. The
request sounded so reasonable, that
the council immediatly gave the de
sired permission.
A communication asking for a
street light out on Eighth street, was
received and read, and upon motion
of Councilman Pankow, action was de
ferred until next fall, as summer and
long days were in the offing.
F. W. Talbott, manufacturer of Til
lamook soda water and other soft
drinks, was present and renewed his
contention that he was being dis
criminated against in the city of his
adoption, where he paid good sized
city taxes, in that he was not permit
ted to sell soda water in the city with
out paying a $50 license. He thought
he should be able to supply local
stores and others, and that the ord
inance ought to be classified, so that
stores could retail his goods on a
smaller license. The council saw the
apparent justice of his contention,
and the city attorney was asked to
add another class of license, when the
present ordinance could be amended
to cover the case of the local manu
facturer.
It was suggested by a number of
the council, and mentally coincided
in by the reporters present, that Mr.
Talbott should bring up some of his
soda-water, and allow them to sample
same to determine its food values,
which he promised to do. Likewise
it might be a good plan for the re
tailers of carbonated drinks and ice
cream to join with Mr. Talbott, and
give a joint demonstration. Maybe,
